Island orators do well at Legion zone competition

ONAPING FALLS—The Island students who were the top competitors in their categories travelled to the Onaping Falls Branch 130 of the Royal Canadian Legion to compete in the Zone H-3 championships on March 2.

Winners from Manitoulin included Alexis French of Manitoulin Secondary School, Grade 10/11 (Branch 177 Little Current), who took first place in the Senior category and who spoke on the topic of ‘Identity Theft;’ Grace Duncanson of Central Manitoulin Public School, Grade 8 (Branch 177 Little Current), who placed first in the Intermediate category and whose speech topic was ‘Hit me with your best shot: My Vaccinophobia;’ and Patrick McCann of Charles C. McLean a Grade 2 student, (Branch 514 Western Manitoulin), who place first in the Primary category with the topic of ‘Being 7;’ Grade 3 student Jocelyn Kuntsi of Assiginack Public School (Branch 177 Little Current) who placed second in the Primary category and whose speech topic was ‘Gladiators.’

“All of the competitors did exceptionally well,” noted Martha Cunningham Closs, youth education chair Zone H3, Royal Canadian Legion. The first place winners will continue on to the Royal Canadian Legion District competitions being held in North Bay on Sunday, March 23.
