Island flag football champions shine at Assiginack tournament

MANITOULIN—The 2024 Island elementary school flag football championships took place October 24 on Manitoulin with the teams vying for the gold football which went to the winners in two divisions.

The tournament was hosted by Assiginack Public School (APS) and held in Manitowaning. Margit Alberti, a teacher at Assiginack Public School explained almost all Island schools took part including several schools having more than one team participating. 

Little Current Public School (LCPS) had two teams participating in the A and B divisions as did Pontiac (Wiikwemkoong), Assiginack, Charles C. McLean (Gore Bay), Shawanosowe School (Whitefish River First Nation) and Central Manitoulin Public School (CMPS) Mindemoya.

The Little Current Public School Coyotes team won the A division of the 2024 Island elementary school flag football championships.

The teams were made up of students in the intermediate grade division, with co-ed teams (each team was required to have two girls on the field at all times).

The Little Current Public School Coyotes team won the A division. The team included coach Tim Lockeyer, and players Boston Abotossaway, Matias Behm, Casey Bowerman, Nathan Quackenbush, Azalea Anaya, Myla Edralin, Kailyn Inglis and Alexis Mousseau.

The Central Manitoulin Public School (CMPS) Eagles won the B division championship. The team included coaches Ellen Ferguson and John Spanos, along with players Allie Flikweert, Lilly Carrick, Oliver Symmons, Login McCarthy, Kaine Rooplal, Ayriss Noble-Stone, Nora Debassige, Devon MacKelvie, Ryley Corbiere, Hunter Kearns, Chayton Martell, Reid Hare, Autumn Bryan, Carter Kuepfer, Brantley Lauber, Brinley Corbiere, Knox Sheppard, Graeme Becks, Gibson Gilchrist and Kristen Lee.
