MINDEMOYA—Ten of Northern Ontario’s finest singers are gathering on Manitoulin Island this August to present ‘ Broadway Extravaganza ,’ a musical revue with one of the finest vocal line-ups to hit the Island! This show has something for everyone! It features popular tunes from classic Broadway shows like ‘Annie Get Your Gun,’ ‘Man of La Mancha,’ and ‘My Fair Lady,’ as well as pieces from fantastic contemporary productions such as ‘Phantom of the Opera,’ ‘Into The Woods’ and ‘Les Miserables,’ just to name a few!
The 10 core vocalists in ‘Broadway Extravaganza’ collaborate annually with additional singers and a chamber orchestra in one of Sudbury’s premier musical events Opera Gala…Opera for a Cause. Since inception just three years ago, the Opera Gala has raised over $12,000 for charity through sold out performances. The highly trained musicians give their time and energy to present a high-quality, educational event that gives back to the community. With ‘Broadway Extravaganza’ the artists hope to ‘take their show on the road’—sharing their love of music with the Manitoulin audience.
One of Canada’s finest accompanists, Dr. Charlene Biggs, will be at the keyboard for ‘Broadway Extravaganza.’ Dr. Biggs is renowned internationally for her work as a performer, adjudicator and teacher and is currently Director of Piano Studies and Co-coordinator of the Music Program at Cambrian College in Sudbury.
With only 200 tickets available, the concert will sell out fast! Musical theatre has a strong following on Manitoulin, where local companies like the Burns Wharf Theatre Players produce a Gilbert and Sullivan musical each year. In addition, Gore Bay Theatre has produced ‘The Sound of Music’ while Manitoulin Secondary School produced ‘Oklahoma!,’ ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’ and ‘Anything Goes.’
‘Broadway Extravaganza’ will have one performance only, on Saturday, August 8 at 7 pm in the Mindemoya Community Centre. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Manitoulin Espresso Bar (Mindemoya), Loco Beanz (Gore Bay) and The Island Jar (Little Current). Tickets are also available by telephone order at 705-377-4755 (Manitoulin) or 705-669-7780 (Sudbury).
