Island athletes vie for provincial glory

BRAMPTON—Five Island athletes competed in midget categories at the Royal Canadian Legion track and field provincial championship this past weekend at Chinguacousy Park in Brampton, giving their best efforts and making Manitoulin proud of their accomplishments.

Ava Assinewai placed eighth in the girls’ 800-metre run with a time of 2:33.01, ninth in the girls’ high jump with a score of 1.35 metres and 13th in the girls’ 300-metre dash with a time of 47.06.

Whittier Dwyer-Gauthier placed eighth in the girls’ high jump with a height of 1.40 metres and placed 13th in the girls’ triple jump with a distance of 8.54 metres.

Keaton Gauthier placed eighth in the boys’ high jump with a height of 1.6 metres and ninth in the boys’ triple jump with a distance of 9.86 metres.

Sophie Hietkamp tied for fifth place in the girls’ high jump with a height of 1.45 metres, 10th in the girls’ triple jump with a distance of 9.43 metres and 11th in the girls’ long jump with a distance of 4.45 metres.

Maren Kasunich finished seventh in the girls’ 2,000-metre run with a time of 6:56.53 and 10th in the girls’ 1,200-metre run with a time of 3:56.52. Her time of 7:21.18 in the 2,000-metre run at the Island track and field meet held last month set a new record.

The 40 best athletes across all categories will be chosen to represent Team Ontario at the National games, held this coming August in Halifax.
