Increase in enrollments leads to Rainbow Board budget surplus

The Recorder

SUDBURY—An overall increase in school student enrollments within the Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) means that the board has a projected surplus in its 2018-2019 budget.

Norm Blaseg, Director of Education, told the Recorder in a recent interview, “we have seen an increase in enrollment of 339 students, which is very beneficial in terms of funding (the board receives from the province). “Previously, we had been looking at an estimated budget deficit of about $250,000 for the 2018-2019 budget. Now we are projecting a surplus of $250,000.”
“We are definitely happy with this change in projections, and it is all based on the number of students we have enrolled in our schools,” said Mr. Blaseg.

Revised budget estimates for the 2018-2019 school year were presented to the RDSB on January 29, 2019. Enrollment has increased by 339 full-time equivalent students, predominantly in the elementary panel. Total enrollment at October 31, 2018 was 13,210 students.

According to the revised estimates, the Rainbow District School Board’s budget for 2018-2019 is $207 million, an increase of $3.4 million or 1.7 percent.
