Illegally parked vehicles can be towed away

GORE BAY—A Town of Gore Bay council member says that, with a bylaw in place that vehicles are not to be parked on the downtown streets in Gore Bay in the evening and early morning hours during the winter, vehicles that are being illegally parked should be towed away.

“In my opinion, we should have a tow truck randomly come in at say 2:00 am in the morning and tow away any vehicles that are illegally parking on the street,” stated Councillor Dan Osborne at a public works committee meeting last week.”

“This gives people who are at the Legion, or at the rink or somewhere else the chance to move their vehicles before they are towed away,” said Mr. Osborne. “We have a bylaw and can make it happen.”

“It has been done before, and it doesn’t take long before everyone gets the message,” stated  committee member Brian Dittmar.

Roger Chenard, town public works foreman, raised the issue at last week’s meeting. “We have two options; these vehicles can be ticketed and fined, or towed away. If we had a company to do this, we would have to make these arrangements, have the licence plates noted  and have the vehicle towed away.”

“We want the vehicles off the street at night so that we can plow the streets,” stated Mr. Chenard.

Mayor Ron Lane agreed that as long as the town has a bylaw in place that indicates vehicles can be towed away, it can take place.

Mr. Chenard said the people that he has already talked to who had been illegally parking on the downtown streets overnight during the winter, “I haven’t had to talk to a second time.”
