Ice Chips to Canoe Quips

Dawna-Strong! 

Dawna Chartrand is a super-fit person who also happens to be stronger than your average bear! She just got the official invite to the SCC (Strongman Corporation Canada) Nationals this October! She is a bit nervous but excited that she is getting this opportunity after just a year of ‘Strongman’ training!

Dawna has to be psyched for this October 11-13th event that will be held in Moncton this year. She has converted her home and backyard into an elite training facility! She even has those huge Atlas Stones, kegs and tires she will be hoisting and flipping this fall! You go, Dawna!

Golf scramble

Activity promoter, Mark Peltier helped host the Mnidoo Mnising 2-Person Scramble Youth Golf Tourney over the weekend. The Mixed Champions were Danica Peltier and Sheldon Mandamin. The Ladies Champions were Marilyn Stevens and Aaliya Corbiere (btw, Aaliya also won the ladies long drive and closest to the pin)! The Men’s Champions were Dominic and Matty Morningstar. Dominic and Matty shot a 7 over par 79, with two teams just one stroke back at 80! 

The major door prize winner was Easton Lauber, winning some tickets to see the Toronto Blue Jays. Congratulations to all golfers, who played 18 holes in all that rain and wind, tough conditions. Miigwech to the Rainbow Ridge Golf Course, for hosting the event!

The Nickelnuts repeated as Champions of the Beaton Classic held on August 11 at the Moonlight beach in Sudbury. The winning team consists of: Aurel Fox-Recollet of Wiikwemkoong, ( 7.5 km running) Jeff Paul (1km swim) Geoffrey Helluin (Bicycle 24 km) and Robert Gregoris (Solo Canoe 4 km). The winning team earned a new course record of 1 hr and 52 minutes. The Beaton Classic is one of the oldest multi-sport events in Canada. It can be done solo, or as teams of two or four.

and More!

Congratulations to the Assiginack Ball participants but here are the podium finishers! In the 12 and under set it was Team Wiky in first and the Giants in second. In the 13-15 Division the Bat Attitudes took the title over the Pitch Please squad. In the elder 16-18 Category, the Fatal Flamingos edged out the Sons of Pitches

First, a HUGE thank you to their umpires! It could not have happened without you: Ryan Stewart, Larry Harasym, Reuben Allen, Bud Spry and Murray Gammie.

From the organizational talents of Jackie White, also in September they are are running a short ball hockey league for kids. Here is her pitch: Kids, come and get warmed up for the hockey season by joining a ball hockey league!

Taking place at Assiginack arena on the dry pad on Thursdays from September 12 to October 10, 2024. Registration in advance is required, just log into the Township website and under the ‘Courses’ tab you can see all the cool things to do. 

The cost is just $10 for the five-week session. The U7 & U9 play from 6-6:45 pm, U11: 7-7:45, U13: 7:45-8:30 pm, U15: 8:30-9:15 and U18: 9:15-10 PM. 

Next, will be free line dancing then starting in September there is Zumba, senior dance and kids’ dance! Getting ‘Assiggy’ with it! Cringe acknowledged.

Record setter!

Wiikwemkoong’s Aurel Fox-Recollet, helped his team again this year at the endearing and enduring, Beaton Classic in and around Lake Ramsey. Aurel was drafted to do the running leg of the quadrathlon last year, helping them win. Last week, the team not only won but set the course record in the cycle, swim, canoe and running event!  Way to goooo, Aurel!
