Haw-some runners!

The annual Haw Run(s) took place over this past weekend’s Haweater Weekend in Little Current and despite the heat and humidity a record of 122 runners braved the conditions. The Haw was the fourth event on the Breakaway Sports schedule.

In the 5K distance, T.J. Green was first overall (18:19), being pushed by John Kosar (18:40) and Alan Wilkin (18:41)! Heather Ferguson (22:34) was the fastest female in front of Laurel Leconte and Liz Van Every. The U-16 females were led by Alice May with a great 27:34 clocking, ahead of Madeline Keller and youngster, Sarah Joyce. The U-16 male division was won by Lucas Trottier in a competitive race (22:05), staving off Aiden Steedman, 17 seconds behind and Aiden was 36 seconds in front of third place, Oliver Hall! The Masters Female category saw Sari Harris in first, Joey-Lynn France second and Nancy Charbonneau, third. In the Masters Males’, Tim Verlaan, Dave Lee and Greg Bond were the medalists, respectively.

Those choosing twice as much heat and pavement were fewer but enjoyed twice the ‘fun’in the 10K! First overall was Adam Ferguson (39:18), taking the Open Male division. Christian Kaiser-Fox was second and Aaron Doxtator, third. The first woman was Shannon Miller (41:54) and the second fastest over the distance. Lindsay Moreau-Verlaan took the silver and Romana Benoit earned the bronze medal. Young teen, David Joyce was the lone U-16 male and Mila Odjig and Brooke Simon were also the only courageous, U-16 girls!

Manitoulin Pickleball Club members keep on improving their game and facilities. They are always ready to accept new members into the fold.

Congratulations of course to the other 97 participants! Next up on the Breakaway Events page is the 6-hour Relay and kids’ race, mountain bike extravaganza at the fabulous trail complex at McLean’s Park on Assiginack’s New England Road on August 31!

MTB’ers gain valuable experience!

Local mountain biker teens have been all over competing in races and building stamina and racing experience. Nathan Quackenbush and Dane Gibeault were just down to race in the Ontario Cup race at the Mansfield Outdoor Centre in Mulmur, ON.

Nathan Quackenbush had a strong race and finished 13th in the U15 division. Dane Gibeault was racing in the U17 Expert division but had a crash in his first lap and couldn’t finish. He was a little sore and his bike needed some minor adjustments, but he is ready to race again. No worries on the crash, Dane. Wags in the scene will say, “if you are not crashing, you are not trying hard enough!”
A couple of racers looking forward to the Provincial Championships in August at the Kelso Conservation Area will be held over three days from August 9th-11th. Best of luck to Nathan and Bradley Slaght this weekend.

Crater Conquered!

Little Current’s Andrew Jeffery who now hails from Southampton down on the Bruce has been competing in a few triathlons lately. At the Conquer the Crater triathlon in Sudbury, he came first in his age category. He was in a race two weeks ago in Owen Sound and did one in Victoria on vacation where I understand that he had two flat tires! If it weren’t for bad luck, Andrew?

Pickleball Points!

The Manitoulin Pickleball Club keeps on improving their game and facilities. They just installed windscreens on the Little Current Pickleball/Tennis courts at the NEMI Recreational Center.

The conditions of the courts have admittedly deteriorated over time with cracks and rough spots.  However, windscreens will reduce the effects of high winds for those playing tennis or pickleball on the NEMI courts.

The Manitoulin Pickleball Club plays five days a week at the NEMI Recreational Center, indoors on the curling rink surface or on the outdoor courts.  For more information, check the Manitoulin Pickleball website or Facebook page.
