Local invited to National Camp!
Kohyn Eshkawkogan, a first round draft pick by the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s, has been recognized again as player of the future. He got the prestigious invite to the Hockey Canada’s U-17 Development Camp. Kohyn is now getting noticed by scouts on a national level and will allow him an easier path into the Hockey Canada junior programs!
Only 80 players got the call including eight goaltenders, 48 forwards and he was one of just 24 defencemen! Kohyn will take to the ice at Joshua’s Creek Arenas in Oakville as part of Canada’s national under-17 development camp, set to take place this week.
All 80 players have been drafted by Canadian Hockey League teams (39 from the OHL, 23 from the WHL and 18 from the QMJHL). Way to go, Kohyn!
Dedicated athlete posts track PBs!
M’Chigeeng’s Nova Debassige really put in some great results in her school track meet, even setting a Manitoulin record but she kept working out and she has not stopped yet! This past weekend down in Markham she competed at the MTA (Minor Track Association)-hosted Outdoor Championships meet with close to 1,000 total athletes competing from various clubs across Ontario.
Nova posted some great results competing for her club (Airblastoff) in the “Senior” division (13 and 14-year olds) including a couple of personal bests in the 100m, a 13.30 (overall placed 10th out of 54 runners) and a new time in the 200m of 27.87 (overall placed 12th out of 64 runners). Nova was then tapped to run up a division with the intermediate team in the 4 x 100m relay and she won the gold medal! Next up for the never-stop-Nova is the Ontario Summer Games Aug 1-4th, with a few other Manitoulin athletes.
Wiikwemkoong Wolf Pack Win!
There were a lot of Manitoulin people in the Ottawa/Gatineau region for the Every Child Matters hockey and broomball gathering a couple of weeks ago. The U-11 Wolf Pack won gold in their overtime win! Congratulations to players: Treilyn Gonawabi, Jake Mark-Stewart, Tauno Saikkonen, Tavin Shawana, Ty Neshkiwe, Zayden McGregor, Connor Pheasant, Bristol Recollet, Jace Gonawabi, Hudson Gray, Jacen Simon, Bray Wassegijig, Taisto Saikkonen, and Camden Goulais. Hats off to their staff: Coach, Ruby Trudeau, Trainer/Asst Coach, Jay Shawana, Manager Dawn Wemigwans and assistant coaches Shannon Gonawabi and Ralph Gonawabi.

Central activities!
Central Manitoulin has a lot to offer this summer with its two arenas and three community halls. Today and all summer, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, there will be ‘gentle’ yoga classes at the Spring Hall. On Tuesday afternoons from 2 to 3 pm and then 6:15 to 7:15 pm, Wednesday evenings. On the 30th and 31st there will be craft and painting instruction as well.
