Canada Day 5K
Breakaway Sports brought their third event of their series, the Canada Day 5K on the first. Adam Ferguson was first to cross the line in 18:40, just edging high schooler Alan Wilkin then Maxime Mermillod-Blondin was third, that also rounded out the Open Male division. Winning the Open Female category was Heather Ferguson, just ahead of teen Ava Corbiere and Alexandria Cosby in third. Winning the U-16 Female accolades were Fiona McGill, Brooke Simon and Rachel Quackenbush. In the U-16 guys it was a close race right to the line with the top-5 crossing in less than 50 seconds! In first was Romeo Zappia, David Joyce, second and Lucas Trottier, third. Hats off as well to the lone Masters’ runner, Mary Rodgers!
By the way, there are still three events to go on Breakaway’s event page. First is their Youth Mountain Bike Program starting next week in Assiginack’s McLean’s Park. The Haw Run will be on the August long weekend and finally the 6-Hour Relay to end August.
Active Assiginack!
There will be some lucky people in Assiginack with all kinds of fun this summer. They just had their inaugural duck race as a trial run for Canada Day just to see if it would work, and it was a blast! Check the video on Assiginack’s Facebook page. The township’s organizer extraordinaire, Jackie White quipped, “As we don’t have a river to do it in, we ran a tarp down the hill and the fire department shot the water down for us!” A huge shout-out to Chris Mara and Bob White who spent four hours setting it up in the hot sun.
Still to come! Roller blade hockey is starting Monday nights from 6-7 pm for kids. They have their youth ball tournament Aug. 9-11 with the Assiginack Public School Grade 7/8s doing the barbecue as a fundraiser for their trip.

Also, there is yet swim lessons run Aug 12-23, archery camp Aug 20-23 and dance camp Aug. 6-9th.
Powerlifter easily picks up medal!
Transplanted Islander Rachel Hoffman is in Alberta now working as a fitness trainer. Already fit, she recently started powerlifting. A meet combines the three heavy lifts: squat, deadlift and bench press for a cumulative total. Rachel modestly reported that her recent victory didn’t really count because it was just a small one with little competition. I would challenge her on this. First, you are out there doing something to improve yourself, then, you set two new personal bests and finally, I wonder how second place feels? Keep up all the good work, Rachel!
