Mindemoya Youth Tournament to be huge!
The annual event will bring an onslaught of people to Central Manitoulin this weekend. Chairperson of the event Devin Lockeyer (who was passed the torch from his father, Greg) relayed that there will be 37 total teams needing 78 games with five Divisions, including 3 T-Ball teams!
The fun and games will be starting (tomorrow) Thursday night at 5:30 and will restart on Friday with 4 pm games. Saturday gets started at 8:30 am while the Semi-Finals and Championships Sunday start at 8:15 am!
As you can guess, this is a huge machine with a lot of working parts and the organizing committee has been hard at work for a long time now, but there is room for help. If you can volunteer your time to make things go as smooth as possible, please contact any of the committee members Devin Lockeyer, Greg Lockeyer, Annette King, Glenn Duncanson and Owen Duncanson.
Local athletes at Legion Meet
Manitoulin always has a strong contingent entered in the RCL District H Track and Field Meet and as always, they came away with some hardware. This past weekend, the Laurentian track complex was the setting for a little running, jumping and throwing events.
Nova Debassige not only got something, she left something: a new record! Nova dusted the competition with her record, 20.12 second, 150m final! Nova was the fastest in the 80m as well, however, a slower runner set the record! In what must be a wind-assist calculation, it has her speed (10.66s) the fastest, but being a timed final, a runner in a less windy heat set the record at 10.89! I bet with Nova’s determination, she would have easily won a head-to-head match-up!
Ava Corbiere won the 3000m, finishing a dozen seconds ahead of second place! She also ran in the 2000m Steeplechase with only one other runner. Way to be brave, Ava!
Violet Sutherland won the 1200m and finished third in the 800m. Interestingly, she registered her team name as ‘Deerlegs Running.’ I wonder who she is related to? Greg?
Mya Balfe continued her OFSAA high to a first in the long jump and second in the discus and triple jump. Emery Watson took third in the javelin and sixth in the discus. Sadie Bridgeman had a massive 4.87m long jump to take first in the U-18 division. Zoe McCarville competed in the U-16 long jump and missed out on the medals. Jonah Balfe hurled a javelin a hefty 37.7m to win the U-16 and took third in the discus. Andrew Cooper ran a lightning 57.12 to take silver and then bronze in the 800m. Cash Duchene-Milne took a fourth place in triple jump.
Next up for some of these athletes will be the Ontario Summer Games! This Legion meet was also a qualifier for that meet in August in London.
Manitoulin MTBers!
Manitoulin was represented by two riders at the Ontario Cup race at Hiawatha Highlands in Sault Ste. Marie this past weekend. The Ontario Cup has several races over the season and riders this past weekend came from all across Ontario from as far north as Thunder Bay and as far south as London, Ontario.
There was an XCC (short track) race on Saturday, with Nathan Quackenbush finishing 6th in U-15 and Bradley Slaght finishing 4th in U-19.
In the longer XCO (Olympics distance) race, Nathan Quackenbush finished 5th in U-15 and Bradley Slaght finished 1st in the U-19 Sport division.
Upcoming Events!
Please don’t forget two long-standing fitness activities coming soon. First up will be the 20-something occasion of the Mindemoya Classic! It is a triathlon like you wouldn’t see anywhere else. It is a run-paddle-pedal triathlon in and around the public beach on beautiful Lake Mindemoya on June 30. You can visit the Breakaway Sports Events page for info and registration. Of course, then Little Current plays host to the annual Canada Day 5k run on the 1st! Stay active, Manitoulin!
