Magic in Massey!

Congratulations to the local hearty souls who were up at the ungodly hour last weekend at the Massey Race weekend festivities. How about David Williamson who completed the 42 kilometer full marathon. In the 21km half-marathon, Little Current’s Steve Fessenden was 11th overall and in only 1:36! In the 10K race Wikwemikong’s Stephen Odjig who finished 8th overall had an amazing time of 42 minutes! Hats off to Mindemoya’s Derek Pichoski who has changed his fitness level so much over the last couple of years that he couldn’t even have fathomed himself running for a complete 10km. In fact the idea that he did just that demonstrates an amazing amount of courage. Hats off as well to these amazing other local runners who also completed the full 10,000 meters. Way to go: Mike Rueter, Mary Hermsen, Natasha Rueter, Allison Santala and Dianne Santala.

NAIG Competitor Kudos!

Congratulations to the full local team who are making their west to the North American Indigenous Games coming up before this month ends in Regina, Saskatchewan. Names keep filtering in and if I have still missed anyone who is also heading west this week please let me know so we can acknowledge your efforts. One person who has been overlooked thus far is Caiylee Ense who is competing in badminton. Good luck Caiylee!

Ultimate Tuesday, Thursday?

The great local Ultimate progressive group has been willing to get together when ever the majority of people seem to be available. Sometime on a Tuesday and sometimes on a Thursday it seems. If you want a weekly update you may want to find Benjamin Quackenbush on Facebook or type in Manitoulin Ultimate Frisbee!

Ultimate, a game that was originally called “the ultimate game experience” back in the late 60s became Ultimate Frisbee and finally today, is known simply as Ultimate. It is often described as a mixture of football, soccer, handball and basketball. The goal is to get a flying disc down the field from player to player (without the disc holder running) and into an end zone. One of the amazing twists of the sport, even at the highest levels is that there are no referees. Players are expected to adhere to the ‘Spirit of the Game’ and play with the outmost sportsmanship and be able to self-officiate. It works, check it out! The best thing is that you don’t need to be experienced…curious maybe but it is a very supportive group of people. Interested players meet at the Low Island Park in Little Current from 7 pm until you are too tired or you need to get the kids to bed.

Help needed for a local minor hockey association

The Manitowaning Minor Hockey Association hit a bump in the road at their recent Summerfest Weekend. In an event that was supposed to increase their coffers, there was a break-in at the pavilion where they sell their candy, pop and chips and suffered the loss of $300 in product. It is sad to think that the people who did this were robbing the kids who play hockey in this community. This group has done some great work for their community over the last number of years. If you can help them out please do what you can.
