Ice Chips to Canoe Quips

Golfing against Ontario!

Congratulations to the Manitoulin Secondary Golf Team that featured three competitors in the all-Ontario OFSAA Championships! Noah Thorpe had the best round of anyone at the tournament with his day one tally of 69. Along with his second day score, Noah finished in third! Hats off as well to Ava Corbiere and Amy Smith who didn’t medal but played well!

Mustang Cross Country

The Mustangs continue to race and train for their upcoming important qualifying races. Sudbury’s Turkey Gobbler has become a major race destination with over 370 participants participating in their three distances. In the 8km race, 16-year-old Brodie Pennie won the overall race in 28:48, a minute-and-a-half ahead of second place! Maren Kasunich was the fastest female in 35:24! The MSS Mustangs entered 11 runners for the event. Also competing were Alan Wilkin – 5th, T.J. Green, Xavi Mara, Matthew Wilkin, Wyatt Williamson Wright, Ava Corbiere and Morgan Green. Running in the 3.5 km distance was Issac Quackenbush and Bazi Mara!

Last week the team competed in the Pre-NSSAA warm-up for the real deal this week. The race was held at Stoneridge Golf Course in Elliott Lake. They had a very good day with four first place individual finishes and winning three team titles with only three full teams. Here are the top-10 finishers. In the Novice girls’ race Mady Keller, 6th. Novice boys’, Bazi Mara, 2nd, Isaac Quackenbush, 4th. Junior Girls’ Mya Balfe, 1st, Fia Flanagan, 3rd, Emery Watson, 8th, Izzy Hughson, 9th. Junior Boys’ Wyatt Williamson-Wright, 1st. Senior girls’,  Maren Kasunich, 1st, Mackenzie Green, 2nd, Morgan Green, 4th, Autumn Davy, 5th, Delaney Bridgeman, Abby Hawke, 10th. In the Senior boys’ the Mustangs had a complete sweep with Brodie Pennie, 1st, Alan Wilkin, 2nd, Xavi Mara, 3rd, TJ Green , 4th and  Mathew Wilkin, 5th!

Mountain bike Mustangs

The last mountain bike race of the season was held at Kivi Park with the ever-improving Manitoulin riders doing great. In Novice, Isaac Quackenbush, 2nd, Sebastian Mara, 4th, Ayden Hartley, 6th, Trey Smith, Jack Hagman and Thomas Redmond. In Junior the lone competitor was Tim Arabadzhyi. In Senior Bradley Slaght 3rd and Zach Bond.

The Overall Series Team Standings, MSS ended up 1st in the Novice Male division and tied for first with Lo-Ellen in the Senior Male division. The overall team ended up second to Lo-Ellen Park. In the Individual season standings Isaac Quackenbush, 2nd (tie), Trey Smith, 6th, Jonah Balfe, 8th, Sebastian Mara, 10th, Bradley Slaght, 2nd and Xavi Mara, 9th!

Dane Gibeault, who grinds it out for the LoEllen Park Knights again finished first in the Junior Male division at the 4th race. This completed his perfect season, finishing first in all four races and clinching first place overall in the series as well as propelling his school to the first place aggregate standings!

Also, congratulations to Ginette SimonGand Pierre Labine  who were bronze medalists at skill level 3.0 age 50+ at the Ontario Championships, September 22!
