Beaton Classic!
The Annual Beaton Classic is a swim, bike, paddle and run quadrathlon and is part of the Sudbury Fitness Challenge series of event held all year long. The Beaton had several Manitoulin participants. Aurel Fox-Recollet was the ringer runner for the Nickel Nuts in the four-men relay division. Aurel was the anchor for his team and finished with one of the top-5 times for the 7.5 km run allowing his team to finish first overall! Next up for Aurel will be the Masters’ North American Indigenous Games in Ottawa next week. Good luck, Aurel.
Over in the canoe, young high schooler Dane Gibeault was also recruited as one of the best around in the paddling business. He paddled for the Sudbury Storm foursome with his top-five time for the 4km solo paddle.
In the water, Whitefish Falls’ Tamara Flanagan swam the third overall fastest one kilometre swim to help her mixed four “Still not Dead Yet” first in their division.
Assiginack team Youth ball a huge success
In just its second year, the annual Assiginack Youth Ball Tournament was the place to be this past weekend. There were 11 teams in the tournament that ran from Thursday night to Sunday night and spectators filled the bleachers all day long.
Organizer Jackie White was again blown away that everyone was super positive and showed incredible sportsmanship. “From the players to the coaches to the spectators, it was all positive for four days of ball,” she relayed. Her favourite part was when she watched the first base coach in the 12 and under division in the final game, suggesting where the opposing team was to stand so they would have the best chance to stop the ball from his own team’s batter!
She wanted to make sure to thank the volunteers from Assiginack public school who worked all weekend providing food and drinks at the tournament, and a special shout out to Janet McCarville and Dawn Roque who took on the job of making it happen with the support of Assiginack Public School parents.
Jackie reserves the top accolades to the umpires. None of this would even be possible without the incredible umpires who stood out there in the hot sun, and wind and ensured these kids had great games. Ryan Stewart, Nathan Howard, Larry Harasym, Joe Cooper, Reuben Allen and Ron Cooper. They are truly the guys that made the tournament.
Pike Masters!
The August 12th edition of the Wiikwemkoong Anglers Pike Derby took place this past Saturday. The successful tournaments are a two-fish, combined length, live release tournament, so your video skills are also important. There must be a clear video of both the measuring and of the release.
On Saturday, the flotilla boated and released a ton of pike! Taking home some money for more lures and gas was Jr. Corbiere with $335 thanks to his 73.75 inches of pike. Mike Assinewai was in second with 70.5” for $200 and Casey Debassige pocketed $135 for 66”.
The derbies also earn money for the season ending Pike Masters championship pot! To date, there is a healthy $2,129 that is slated to be shared this fall. For more information, check out the Wiikwemkoong Anglers Facebook page for important updates.
