The 10th North American Indigenous Games will be hosted by Halifax (Kjipuktuk) Dartmouth and Millbrook First Nation this coming weekend with several Manitoulin athletes and coaches heading east to take part. The following list is by no means exhaustive, I am sure. I hope to put in a dedicated piece next week on the results and experiences, at the NAIG. Please email any info at chipstoquips@gmail.com.
Good luck to athletes Andrew Rose (volleyball), Maren Kasunich (track), ( 100 M, 200 M, TJ, LJ), Brooke Gibeault (basketball, paddling), Jaron Panamick, Dane Gibeault (paddling and basketball), Xavier Augonie-Fox, Sapphire Recollet-Case, etc!
Congratulations and good luck as well to coaches, Deidre Debassige, Dustin Peltier and Amber Debassige.
Provincial Legionnaires!
Several Manitoulin athletes qualified for the Provincial Legion meet this past weekend in London and did very well!
Here are some of the results: Brooke Gibeault an amazing multi-sport athlete put her skills to good use in the seven-event Heptathlon. She was first in the high jump and shot put, second in the javelin and competitive in all the others to finish with the bronze medal! Her cousin Annie Balfe was silver in the triple jump and bronze in the discus. Their cousin Brodie Pennie took silver in the steeplechase and 5th in the U-18 1500m and 3000m! Congrats as well to Rhyis Arthur who finished in the top-ten in the high and long jumps!
Swimmer to brave Lake Huron against Cancer!
When Manitowaning’s Jackie White is not busy getting Assiginack active, she is herself! Jackie has been a competitive swimmer since back in the day and has been on speed dial for many hoping to improve their swimming, especially in the always-challenging, open-water. Jackie has recently put her skills and charity to the test by signing up for the 15km Swim Challenge for the Canadian Cancer Society. She modestly admits that it has been several years since she has swum that kind of distance, but this month, “will be spent building that endurance back up in the lovely, albeit cold, Lake Huron.” I would love your help. Whether you donate a lot or a little, every bit counts.” To help her surpass her goal visit her Facebook page and look for her Cancer Swim Challenge. Good luck, Jackie!
