Mindemoya Classic July 2nd!

For the uninitiated, the race consists of a 5.5 km run, approximately a 4km paddle and then a 13km bike ride. The ranked race categories are: Solo endurance (with canoe or kayak), team of two relay or endurance (with 1 canoe), team of four relay or endurance (with 2 canoes, coed), a family team of two relay or endurance (child 12 or under), family team of 4 relay or endurance (child 12 or under, one canoe allowable) and finally a masters solo, two or four relay or endurance (all team members 50+)

With that being said, in the spirit of participation, if you want to join and you have a team of three or thirty, or somewhere in-between, you’re always welcome to enter as an “unranked” team and join in the fun. This is a non-profit race. All proceeds go to supporting youth sports programming on Manitoulin.

No Island fastball?

But, Gerard Baibomcowai knew there were players who wanted to play. His idea, “build it and they will come!” He put out the offer, Island-wide with little response. There was however, enough interest in Wiikwemkoong to make a small league in town.

Gerard has four teams committed yet there are a few players needed to fill out some of the rosters. He has an offer out for new players who are encouraged to come and learn fastball. The pay-to-play deal is just $50 a player (paid up front and waivers signed).

Gerry is also in need of umpires who will get $40 a game. The home teams will supply 1st/2nd base umps for games of an hour and a half. Games will be Mondays, Wednesdays and maybe some Saturday night baseball also. The teams registered are: Wiky Son’s Of Pitches, Kaboni Tigers, Wiky Lumberjacks and Collin James!? Contact Gerard through Facebook if interested.
