Calling all Hikers, Walkers, Explorers, and Adventurers!

Join the Central Manitoulin Trail Committee members as they showcase the Wagg’s Woods Trails at 1 Thorne Street in Mindemoya. With the completion of the Alvar Trail, all of their trails are now open. They are well marked and ready to walk.

There are trails that will suit all levels of ability: the Woodland Accessibility Trail is fully accessible, the Fossil Trail is the old streambed and full of fossils, our Escarpment Trail is more for the adventurer and follows the top of the escarpment, and the Alvar Trail lets one wander along an Alvar full of glacial erratics.

Join them on June 3rd from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for a soft opening and follow along as they lead guided hikes on the trails of your choice. Those interested will meet in the Wagg’s Trail Parking Lot on Thorne Street (visible on Google Maps). The grand opening is to follow at a later date.

North Shore Shoo-ins!

The North Shore Secondary School Association’s Track and Field Championships were held last week work at Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS) in Desbarats playing host to see whoever on to this week’s NOSSA Competition. Manitoulin, once again had a strong core of dedicated athletes, competing.

Congratulations to the MSS Girls team for finishing first on aggregate,  9 points ahead of CASS. The Mustang Boys’ team finished second to the home team, CASS who also won the overall team title.

The following Island kids also received awards as the top individual points amassed. In the Senior Girls, Annie Balfe and Maren Kasunich shared the top honors. Autumn Davy was the top Junior Girl and Mya Balfe was number one in the Novice Girls. On the guys side, Brodie Pennie won for the Seniors.

Any athlete finishing in the top three of their event, earns the trip to Sudbury but unfortunately I did not get the qualifying list before press time.

WHS Athletes also do well!

On their small but mighty team, Wiikwemkoong competitors did great. Janelle Dokum finished 4th in both Junior Girls 100 and 200m dashes and qualifies for NOSSA in the 200. Mercedes Aibens finished 7th in Senior Girls Triple jump, in her first visit to NSSSA Track & Field.

Their Coach is Chris Mara by the way and Jillian Peltier is their Athletics Director and are proud of all of their athletes on their tiny team for doing their best!

Fast Family Time!

The Quackenbush family had a busy weekend racing at the Storm Adventure Race series on the weekend. On Saturday Ben and the kids raced the 40km Short Course. Rachel (10), Nathan (12) and Isaac (13) rocked it. They finished 2nd in the family category for the silver with a time of 5 hours and 22 minutes. Even more impressively, they were 14th overall out of 61 teams beating most of the adults in the race!

Dr. Ben Quakenbush and the kids raced the 40km Short Course and Rachel (10), Nathan (12) and Isaac (13) rocked it.

On Sunday, Sarah and Ben raced the 55km Long Course. They placed 3rd in the Coed category and 6th overall out of 65 teams with a time of 6 hours and 56 minutes! The family that adventure races together, stays together!

There is nothing like a good canoe race on a warm late spring day to get the smiles going.
