Panther Points

The Bantam and Midget Panthers are set to play host to the B division Tournament of Champions over the next two weekends right here in Little Current. The Bantams go first this weekend (March 7 – 9) at the NEMI Complex. It is really great to see that Manitoulin is well-represented by great players from all over our area. Congratulations to the following players, we are all pulling for you, guys: Braedan Case-Little Current, Patrick Snowdon-Little Current, Tait Wallace-Little Current, Mike Megwanabe-Birch Island, Adam Goodfellow-Aundeck Omni Kaning, Ethan Corbiere-Aundeck Omni Kaning, Nathan Debassige-M’Chigeeng, Dakotah Hare-M’Chigeeng, Chandler Yashuk-Clark- Gore Bay, Cole King-Mindemoya, Mason Pine-Tehkummah, Noah Moreau-Manitowaning, Greg Doane-Mindemoya, Jalen Waindebence-Sheguindah First Nation. Coach Steve Doane has got the team firing on all cylinders and also playing a stingy defensive game that has served them well as the season has progressed.

The Midgets run the rink at the end of the March Break with games going from March 14 – 16. More news for the midgets next week. Go Panthers!

Panthers to hold spring tryouts in April

If you have a child hoping to try out for one of next year’s ‘rep’ squads you should visit the manitoulinpathers.ca website for some important new info. The Manitoulin Panthers will be having spring tryouts this year and eliminate fall tryouts altogether!

On April 8-9 from 6:30-8 pm a Novice skate will be offered to see what interest there is to warrant a team entering league play. Tryouts for Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget will take place on April 14-18.

Basketball Eagles

Congratulations to the Central Manitoulin Eagles boys’ basketball team who played in the Cougar Classic Invitational last week in Sudbury. The team, coached by CMPS principal Tracey Chapman, is a relatively young one with just a pair of Grade 8ers on the floor. Coach Chapman was very proud of her charges and impressed with their work ethic and sportsmanship through the three games. They started off with a strong win over Valleyview and then dropped matches to Northeastern and Algonquin. Way to go guys: Alex Dawson, Chris Haner, C.J. Wilson, Ethan Smith, Cole King, James Scott, Hunter Cranston, Matthew Redmond, Sean Orford, Quinn Coker and Isaac Gosse.

CrossFit Games begin

The annual CrossFit Games has started with its progression to find the fittest athlete in the world this coming summer. The festivities start with the Open. In this stage absolutely anyone in the world with a computer can enter complete the workout and see how they compare with people from their region and from around the world. It is ‘kinda’ fun to try out these routines, especially in the early stages when many people have the basic equipment and ability to finish. It makes one appreciate how impressive these feats are. For instance, the first workout is just 10 minutes long and you try and complete as many reps as possible of the following couplet: 30 double-unders then 15 snatches (75/50lbs) and you count every single rep. A local lad, Phil Cress who graduated from the CrossFit Genetic Potential club at Manitoulin Secondary, is ranked as 40th in the whole of eastern Canada! Phil finished eight full rounds or 360 reps in total––in ten minutes! Phil entered his score at his club in Waterloo where his is also an instructor. Congratulations to some of the other MSS alumni who have also kept up their fitness and are still competing. Hats off to Parker Bondi, Chris King, Lucas Proulx, Victoria Niven and current locals coaches John and Tina Balfe, Peter Tallman, Amy Mavec and Kyle McDermid. Active Adults

This is a continuing feature on adults making an effort to stay active. This week we feature a regular crew of Mindemoya walkers and runners who can be seen in the worst of weather staying healthy. Congratulations to some of the morning crew of Tom and Barb McQuay and Marylyn Burns. Out every day at lunch is Bev McKillop followed by the afternoon pair of Wendy Wiggins and her dog. Keep up the good work everyone. If you know someone in your community who deserves recognition for their dogged determination for personal fitness, please send me a note.

New contact info!

Some of my past contacts may have been sent a fraudulent email from my account with one of those annoying requests for money over the last week. Essentially my account has been taken out of my hands. Unfortunately, I was not able to contact my contacts to warn that this was occurring. Three password changes later I am still unable to receive any emails so I am done with my old account and have registered the following one. I encourage everyone to continue to contact me and apologise to anyone who has sent an email that has been lost. Apparently it is sitting in a computer in Fiji, the weather is a little warmer there I understand…

A good sport is good for sports.
