Island Curlers in elementary tournament
Three Manitoulin, elementary curling teams were in Sudbury over the weekend to compete in the Rainbow District School Board’s bonspiel. Little Current sent two teams of Coyotes. Team 1 consisted of: Dustin McKenzie – skip, Brady Case – vice, Olivia Hall – second, Travis Aelick – lead. During the action they won two games and tied the third. To break the tie the teams had to do a draw to the button. The foursome from St. Paul’s unfortunately drew closer to the button. The team finished in 6th out of 22 teams.
Their second squad consisted of Morgan Hall – skip, Rob Norris – Vice, Mackenzie Cortes – Second, Mason Collins – Lead. This team was 3 and 0! In the finals they battled against St. Paul’s, the team that beat the Little Current team-1 in the draw to the button tie-breaker. In a great 6-ender they lost 6-4, placing second.
Central Manitoulin sent an Eagles’ team featuring: Coach, Dawn Dawson and players Alex Dawson, Jary White, Isaac Gosse and Amber Wahl.
Their first game was a well played match, really well executed, winning by taking 4 of 6 ends. The next two games were also well-played, but unfortunately unable to take the win. In the skills competition however the royal purple finished in a three-way tie for second place out of 32 teams.
Staff facilitator and cheerleader, Erica Wadman was really impressed with the level of sportsmanship, teamwork, and professionalism that the team played with. Congratulations to all of the local rinks participating.

Co-ed Volleyball
The annual Pontiac Co-ed Volleyball Tournament took place this past Saturday with a great day of volleyball for the six teams. MMHA Spotlight
In the house-league spotlight are the Mindemoya Midget Thunder squad. The team is coming up in the standings and are currently in third place in their 5-team division. They also sport the dubious stat as having the most penalty minutes per game, although they have thankfully been settling down lately.
In a recent game they took on M’Chigeeng on Sunday, January 19 and came away with an 8-4 home-ice victory. The game was much closer than the score indicates with both sides getting good scoring opportunities. The Thunder were lead by Ben Haner (5 goals) and Jamie Millette (2 goals) while Junior Beaudin (2 goals, 1 assist) and Kai Saunders (1 goal, 2 assists) countered for M’Chigeeng Chris Nichols guarded the twine for Mindemoya while Logan Debassige (usually a skater) played his first goal of the season in M’Chigeeng’s net and made some good saves.
Other points were garnered by Mindemoya’s Wyatt Pine (3 assists), Jacob Nichols (1 goal), Matthew Scott (1 assist), David Scott (2 assists), Isaac Sloss (1 assist) and Alyssa Cranston (1 assist). For M’Chigeeng, Nevada Waindubence had a goal while Dylan Francis and Trey Bebonang had single assists.

Island Lady Wolves
Congratulations to the Manitoulin girls who play for the Sudbury Lady Wolves Bantam “B” squad. This weekend they played in the West Northumberland 9th Annual Winter Classic, taking the championship trophy up north. The team features goaltender Dana McLeod who helped the Wolves finish first in the round robin including an impressive shut-out effort. Aurora Enosse picked up two assists and Seneca Manitowabi had a goal in their 3 – 0 shut-out of the Clarington Flames for the title. The tourney win is the second of their season as the team really makes the best of their size, speed and skill. Back in November the team won the Barrie Sharkfest, a huge event that had twelve teams in their division. Way to go girls, keep up the hard work!
