Manitoulin gymnasts earn hardware
The MSS Girls’ Gymnastics team competed at the NOSSA Gymnastics Championship in Sudbury on Friday, April 13. They represented Manitoulin with pride and grit, holding their own when faced with steep competition from 10 schools across the region.
Newly-crowned NOSSA champion Summer Beaudin took the gold in Level 2 vault, qualifying her for the OFSAA Gymnastics Festival to be held April 22-24 in Sudbury. Joining her at OFSAA will be Level 4 athlete Mackenzie Cortes, who placed 3rd on vault, bars, and beam, 6th on floor (qualifying her in all four events), and 4th all-around in Level 4. Her strong results allowed Manitoulin to place 3rd overall for the Level 4 Team Award.
As a rookie, Ana Migwans rose to the occasion in Level 1, competing well against over 35 other gymnasts.
Coaches Jill Ferguson and Heather Theijsmeijer are extremely proud of the small-but-mighty MSS squad this year, and look forward to building on everyone’s successes at OFSAA and next year.
OFSSA bound too!
Congratulations to a Manitoulin product, Tanner Webkamigad, who is heading to Collinwood tomorrow to play in the all-Ontario hockey championships for hockey. The lad plays for the St. Charles College boys’ hockey team who were recently crowned NOSSA champions.
The Cardinals recently claimed a 3-0 win over Superior Heights in the NOSSA “AA” championship final in Sault Ste. Marie.
From hockey to Lacrosse
Hockey player Bo Peltier (Gerard and Maxine) will be playing lacrosse for the Brantford Jr B’s this summer. He was also a skater in the recent movie ‘Indian Horse’ where his “job” was to lay out a number of hard bodychecks. Go Bo, go!
Family tradition!
Most sports fans on the Manitoulin are aware of the athletic prowess of Wiikwemkoong’s Webkamigad family, especially in hockey. Everett Webkamigad (son of former T-Bird Brad and Liz) is now a multi-sport athlete in Sault St. Marie. Though he just recently turned 15 the lad is 6 ft, 3 inches and weighs in at 180 lbs. Presently, his AA Major Midgets (Soo Mrs. B’s) are up three games to none in their best of seven playoff series.
At the same time, Ev is trying out for the Sault Jr. Sabrecats rep football squad. He is a quarterback and interestingly enough the other QB is also a Wiky boy, Darren Pitawanakwat. To top it off, Everett has been asked by the coach to join the Soo’s Rep baseball team! This big lad has definitely become some all-round athlete. To add to the Webkamigad tradition (as seen above), Tanner Webkamigad (Colleen) is with the Sault College hockey team. Tanner played in Wiikwemkoong, Mindemoya, Sudbury “AAA” and the recent St. Charles College NOSSA Champions.
Panther points drive!
Determined hockey players are encouraged to join the tryouts for our rep, Panthers this week. Check the Manitoulin Panthers website for times. Take your talent to the rink!
A good sport is good for sports.
