Island thrower on the World stage!

Congratulations to Evansville’s Joseph Maxwell, who will soon be on the world stage coming this summer. The young, largely self-trained phenom has recently and easily surpassed the qualifying mark to punch his card to be in this elite stage. Look out for this dedicated athlete at this summer’s Pan-Am Junior Championship World games. We all wish you the best, Joseph!

Legion Meet!

A large contingent of Manitoulin athletes competed at the June 10th District H, Legion track and field meet held at Laurentian University. Most did exceedingly well. James Scott set a blistering pace at the boys 17 and under, 1800 m race finishing with a great time of 2:03!

Francesca Pheasant continues to roll along in her racing, with 2 silvers in the girls 15 and under, 800 and 1200 m!

Ava Assinewai grabbed a gold in the 11 and under 1200 m in a time of 4:33. She also added a second in the 800m run. Finally she shone again in the high jump with a first place leap of 1.20 m although not even her personal best. Yikes!

Victoria Trudeau ran to victory in the girls 13 and under 300M race in 48.06 and also picked up a second in the 200m. Whittier Gauthier competed in four events notching a first in high jump 13 and under and second in the triple jump, shot put and long jump!

Brodie Pennie took a gold in the 11 and under boys 800m and added a sixth in the long jump as well as a fifth in the triple jump. 

Julian Wemigwans continued his superb running accolades, finishing first in the boys 13+, 800 meters as well as a second in the 300M.

Natalie Pitawanakwat took a third in the 11 and under, 1200 meters. She also competed in the 800 meters. Meanwhile, Annie Balfe took the bronze in the 11 and under triple jump with sister Maya right behind her. They also competed in the long jump, 100m and 800m.

It was a great showing by local athletes. Also competing where Jared and Mackenzie Cortes, Rylan Pennie, Malia Leighton and Gabriel Trudeau. Remember, participation in an effort to improve yourself is the most important. Well done Manitoulin!

OPP Torch Run

The annual OPP Torch Run will be receiving the Torch for the annual Law enforcement Torch Run in Mindemoya, Wednesday, June 14th. The celebration will also highlight the accomplishments of our local athletes who recently competed in the World, Winter Games! Their event will be starting from the Mindemoya OPP detachment with their local Special “O” athletes, heading to CMPS, where they will be picking up the entire school and continuing on around the block to the Mindemoya OPP detachment. In honor of their 30th anniversary of the OPP Law Enforcement Torch Run, there will be refreshments for anyone joining in on the activities.

Additionally, there will be will be presentation from one of their world-ranked athletes, Matthew Bedard who will also speak for teammate, Kelsie Mellan who also competed in Austria at the World Winter Games this past winter. Anyone is welcome to come out and support the cause!

Learn to sail and que for a summer job opportunity!

The Little Current Yacht Club would like to remind everyone that their youth and adult sailing programs are prepping for another excellent season and looking for your interest. The club is offering their two flagship programs: Taste: A Fun Introduction to Sailing – Ages 6 – 12 and CANSail 1 & 2: Certified Programs – Ages 8 – 14. They also offer adult Lessons available by appointment, which this land-lubber highly recommends! At this late date the club is still offering an early bird registration discount of $10 off, if people register before June 30th. The ideal candidate will have “a passion for and experience with sailing and/or boating. Has experience and enjoys working with children. Is at least 16 years of age and has a Pleasure Craft Operating Card. What an amazing way to spend the summer for a young person. Finally, Bryce Mastelko of Little Current should be commended for becoming a Certified Sailing Instructor through the Ontario Sailing Association. He attended back to back weekends of training in Barrie (54 hours); on-line fundamentals training (6 weeks) and the sailing boat safety course in Hamilton. A huge time commitment for a grade 12 student in June, congratulations, Bryce!
