Panther’s kit performs

Congrats to the son (Deakon) of former Panthers winger J.R. Clarke for picking up the Sportsmanship Trophy from the Capreol Minor Hockey Association. The Gagne Sportsmanship and Ability award shows that Deakon is following in his dad’s skate grooves. J.R. was a hardworking, slick scoring member of the Panthers for a number of years.

Fitness Challenge

Here is some very positive, peer pressure I am happy to pass on. Wikwemikong’s Sarah Odjig is throwing down a challenge to all Wikwemikong walkers and runners to help ‘run’ diabetes out of town by participating in the annual Sudbury Rocks Race weekend. There is something for everyone with a 1km race for kids, a 5k, 10k, relay half-marathon, individual half-marathon and finally the full, 42km marathon.

With the Sudbury Rocks events raising over $500,000 since its inception Sarah is hoping to get as many Manitoulinites and especially her immediate community to plant footsteps towards the Mothers’ Day event on May 8 in Sudbury.

The Sudbury Rocks administration, recognizing what a positive role model Sarah has been over the last six years has an interview of her on their website and Facebook page to provide inspiration to others to get out and do their share to combat this awful disease. For more information you can visit the Sudbury Rocks Running Club or go the race website at sudburyrocksmarathon.com.

Wikwemikong Soccer Club 2016

Mindemoya Classic in 9 weeks!

The 15th edition of the Mindemoya Classic run-paddle-pedal triathlon is set to go on July 3 for this year. The “challenge for everyone” fun begins with registration starting at 8 am Sunday morning at the Government Dock down at Lake Mindemoya. Part of the Central Manitoulin Lions Club fun Homecoming Weekend, the race is for anyone from the elite to the occasional athlete. You can do it all on your own or with three other helpers. You can basically put together any combination or permutations of a team in the unofficial “unranked” division. There is also something for joggers with the 5.5 km run; canoe/kayakers paddle 4k and/or a bike route of just 13km. Word has it that there is a fun group of staff from Central Manitoulin Public School who are putting in at least one team. How about it, other Manitoulin schools? What a great “school’s out for summer activity”!

If you would like more information on the Classic visit the race website at www.mindemoyaclassic.com or you can find them on Facebook or on Twitter: @Mindyclassic

In Passing

Our thoughts and condolences to the many friends and family of the late Harold Morphet who passed away this past week. Harold was a memorable, longtime, high-scoring hockey star on Manitoulin.

A good sport is good for sports.
