Case at Provincials!
Little Current and former Panther Braeden Case will suit up with his AAA Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves this week beginning at the all-Ontario, Triple A Championships to fight for the right to be recognized as the best midget squad in the province. The event, being held in Waterloo, will see Sudbury competing against London, North York, Kanata, Whitby as well as Waterloo. Good luck, Braeden and Wolves.
Panther Points
Our Manitoulin Panthers are all set to enter the Nickel District League playoffs and as an organization have been showing some strong inroads in all of their divisions. The Novice Panthers ended up in fourth place in the eight team division. Their A division playoffs start this Friday at the Cambrian arena against the Nickel City Devils.
The Atoms and their young squad has had an amazing year as they amassed 21 points and hold down 6th place in the standings. The team is in Chelmsford Friday to take on the Nickel City Devils in their tournament-style playoffs.
In the Peewee division, the (usually) Grade 6/7 Panthers will stare down the Nickel City Snipers on Friday at the Carmichael Arena in Sudbury. The Peewees have managed to make their way to second place in their Division II standings.
The Bantams have had great games against the best in the league and find themselves in 3rd position of the competitive Division II of the NDMHL. Their post-season also starts this coming Friday at the Carmichael Arena where they will compete against the Sudbury Wolves.
Finally, the veteran Panthers, the Midgets, will put their very, young team up against much more experienced squads. The Midgets have had a rebuilding year and have gelled as a group as the year has gone through of trials and tribulations. Their playoffs finished off this past weekend at home where they could not pick up a win against their B playoff championship finals over the West Nipissing Sting.

Island Soccer registration time!
The amazing Island Soccer League is ramping up to continue for 2016! The league is open to everyone from Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8 kids. The best, organized team-sports deal on Manitoulin is just $25 per player ($70 after April 18) and that includes a jersey, shorts, socks and a season-end award. All games are played at Manitoulin Secondary School, on Saturday mornings in May and June.

Here are some more results from last week’s, 45th Little NHL hockey tournament held in Mississauga also included a Bantam B championship for the Aundeck Omni Kaning Chiefs as Coach Abotossaway’s squad downed Batchewana by a 4 – 3 score. In the Bantam A final the Whitefish River Warriors picked up the silver as they dropped a close one 4 – 2 against Six Nations.
Two more winners of the Vicky Corbiere Education Bursary were Wikwemikong’s Kieran Peltier (Gerard and Maxine) who is studying in Ireland. In addition, Natalie Lewis, another fine young with Wikwemikong hockey player who is studying nursing at Laurentian University. Off the ice in Mississauga a good number of local LNHL alumni and builders were elected to the Hall of Fame. Kelly Babstock, a former Wikwemikong player and now a high-scoring women’s pro player, was inducted in the alumni section. Builders who were inducted included the late Violet and Georgina McGregor of Whitefish River, Lloyd McGregor of Wikwemikong and Pauline and Elizabeth Debassige of M’Chigeeng. Elizabeth is an amazing 93-year-old hockey fan who has watched many a family member shine at hockey over many years and still attends the vast majority of her great-grandchildren’s games. This marvelous lady had no less than nine great-grandchildren playing their hearts out in the 45th annual. Now this is a real hockey mom. Chi-Nokomis!
