OFSAA!
Congratulations to Manitoulin Secondary’s James Scott who competed at OFSAA track and field in the 1,500m and the 800m where he beat both of his personal bests with a 4:16 in the 1,500m in the 800m a 2:02 clocking. In both races James placed 16th provincial at the meet, held at Alumni Field in Windsor. James would like to give a big thanks to Mr. Jon Balfe for enduring the road-trip.
For James, his all-Ontario experience was so much more satisfying than his experience in the 3,000m at NOSSA. In the 3K, where the lap counter skipped lap five and rang the bell early, he ended up losing the “first” sprint finish, but ended up winning because he managed to peel himself off the track before the other guy once the lap counter got suspicious of their 20 second OFSAA record! Hats off to James’ success despite his very well-rounded school and sporting experience.
RDSB meet accolades
Congratulations to all of the Manitoulin athletes who participated in the first Rainbow Senior Meet last week at Laurentian. Gore Bay’s Malia Leighton had an amazing meet as she scored a perfect 30 points on her way to breaking two of the five records needing an upgrade on the day and was the feature of a Sudbury Star feature. Malia broke the record in the triple jump with an astounding 8.93m leap as well as leading the high jump with such an effort that even the silver medalist broke the RDSB record. Malia cleared a 1.43m bar to be exalted into the Rainbow records. To round out her day, Malia also won the 100m but missed setting another record!
Mackenzie Cortes of LCPS took 5th in the Ggrade 8 division with her 15 points including a 4th in the 200m, 1st in the long jump and 5th in the triple jump. Fellow LCPS Coyote Britney Biederman took 10th place in the division thanks to her 3rd in the 100m, 3rd in the 200m and a 7th in the triple.
Taking 10th in the Grade7 girls’ division was Amber Wiwchar of CC McLean who was a close 2nd in the 400m and 4th in the 1,500m. Congratulations to all and others who won a top-8 finish as they will also be invited to the Champions’ meet on June 21.
Northern Dragons honoured
Sensei Steve St. Pierre and his Espanola Northern Dragons recently held grading ceremonies for two Manitoulin karate students. Last week, Clay Dickson earned his blue belt while this week a rare occasion occurred for Sheguiandah’s Jared Robinson. The Grade 11 MSS student was bestowed the title of Senpei in the process of earning his brown belt. The hard-working, senior was also awarded a black stripe on his belt during the formalities, a seldom-seen recognition. Congratulations to both athletes on their accomplishments.
MTC still running
The Manitoulin Tennis Club has had some unfortunate cancellations due to weather so far this month. However, play is on for every Wednesday and Sunday this summer. They now have a new start time for 6:30 pm from now and throughout the season. Everyone is welcome and lessons are available for beginners if wanted. The congenial club hopes to see you on the courts at Manitoulin Secondary School. Keep updated on their Facebook site.
Island sporting tid-bits
Little Current’s Braedan Case has been recognized by Mark Seidel’s North American Central Scouting Inc. as a top prospect. Braedan has been named to the Central Scouting team for the Carnevale, Junior Showcase Cup to be held in Brampton. The tournament is heavily scouted by the OHL, NCAA, CIS and Tier 2 Junior A. Last season, Case played for the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves where he had a great year. Good luck Braedan. Hard work pays off!
This past weekend saw the Chuck Hare Memorial Ball Tournament took place in M’Chigeeng. The late Mr. Hare was a ball enthusiast who loved the game and wanted to make ball tourneys a low-entry fee, event where fun was the priority. Eight teams played with Team Holleh earning the championship banner. Special kudos to the team known as the Sultans who got together from several different locales.
Former Pontiac athlete Digwahgeens “Dig” Fox now living in Michigan with her son Jay Fox where he was a vital component of his BW Wildcats Basketball team as they won the Stanky Basketball Tournament in Michigan.
Hats off to the organizers of the new Co-Ed Slow-Pitch League in Little Current. With a fun approach to the game, the league has become popular with such team names as “Hit R Done” and “Inglorious Batters.” Have a good time folks!
Wikwemikong’s Lawrence Enosse is a part of the Ontario Project Advisory Team as part of “Sport Alliance Ontario” which is headquartered in Toronto. As director of his community’s Youth Centre, Enosse is active in numerous activities for the youth from ball to dancing programs etc.
A good sport is good for sports.
