Mustangs compete at OFSAA Nordic Skiing!!

Congratulations to Manitoulin Secondary School’s Mackenzie Turner and Tommy Wiwchar who have been quietly representing Manitoulin in cross-country skiing this winter! In fact, the pair with their strong performances competed at the all-Ontario OFSAA championships in Duntroon last week.

Mackenzie placed 12th out of 152 in her 5K race. She iced the competition with a time of 21:29 over the 5km distance.

Tommy, over his 7.5 km trial, placed 109th in an amazing time of 30 minutes, 43 seconds. Hats off to the pair of you!

Panther Points

In the NOHA Tournament of Champions the Manitoulin Novice Panthers fought their way into the semi-finals. Playing in the tourney hosted by Powassan, the Novice team started well with a 3-0 victory over the Porcupine Gold Kings. Unfortunately, they dropped game two to the Cochrane Bears before storming back to obliterate the East Nipissing Vipers by a 10-2 score. In the semi-finals they came up against the eventual champions but dropped a 5 – 2 decision to the Wawa Travelers, who were the best team in the round-robin. Congratulations to the team of ten who had many members suffering through various ailments although the team received numerous accolades over the weekend! The team will now focus on their NDMHL finals.

Meanwhile in Cochrane, the Peewee Panthers started strong with a 6-3 victory over Wawa but subsequently dropped two games to the Timmins North Stars (1-2) in a close one and 8-4 to the Chapleau Huskies. Good effort Peewees!

Panther alumnus Braedan Case’s AAA Wolves won two games over the weekend against the Kapuskasing Flyers. One more victory and the Wolves will win a spot in the All-Ontario Finals to be held in Mississauga. By the way, that tournament will be loaded with scouts from teams at every level. Good luck, Braeden.

Manitoulin Minor Hockey Spotlight

The Mindemoya Thunder Novice team has just completed the nearly impossible, a perfect season. The kids went 20 – 0 – 0 in the regular season and ran the table, going 5 – 0, in the playoff tournament. They capped the season fittingly with a dominating 6 – 1 victory, against a tenacious Gore Bay side, in the ‘A’ final.

Noah Thorpe, who took over the net after Christmas from Sadie Bridgeman (who had been 12 – 0), played goal in the tournament.  Sadie took over Noah’s spot on the point, usually partnered with Tessa Prior. Mya Balfe and Liam Lariviere rounded out their defense. Playing various forward positions were Rylan Carrick, Jack Bridgeman, Seth Verboom, Lucas Brown, John Thirkill, Kohan Campbell and Erin Spry. Head coach Jon Balfe, assistant coach Michael Bridgeman and manager Darren Brown would like to thank the parents of these players for their commitment to practice, in helping make 2015-2016 a season to remember. Congrats on an awesome season, Novice Thunder! If anyone would like their team to be in the MMHA Spotlight next, please send information to the address below.
