CrossFit Catalyst hosts Island athletes

Congratulations to several Manitoulin women who attended a CrossFit completion this past weekend in the Sault hosted by their affiliate club: CrossFit Catalyst. After the event wrapped up Tina Balfe finished in second, Amy Mavec took the bronze and then recent MSS graduate Victoria Niven was fourth! Rounding out the strong Manitoulin representation was Little Current’s Ali Young, although results were not available for her.

Here is a sampling of how these tough athletes did in some of their individual events. Amy won the shuttle run event, Tina won the front squat ladder with a lift of 235lbs, while Amy and Tori Niven both came in second with a lift of 195. In the 400m hill climb, Amy got third, Tina fourth and Tori fifth with the trio just seconds apart.

How about this for a ‘good time’? 60 pushups in 4 min, 50 pull-ups in 4 min, 30 handstand pushups in 4 minutes and so on, getting eliminated if you don’t make each exercise’s time limit. Tori, Amy and Tina all made it to the handstand pushups and Tori finished second in that event, Tina third and Amy was fourth.

When Tina wasn’t busy with her own events she got to watch her two young daughters compete in a fun kids’ event. Congratulations to Annie and Mya who did very well in the Ninja Event, swinging from ring to ring in a traverse, and log rolling, as well as an event that involved burpees, air squats and skipping. Hats off to all!

Mud runner racks buck against cancer

Also on her way back from the Sault over the weekend was Diana St. Pierre (an Islander now living in Espanola) after raising some important money to help fight cancer. Competing in the Muddy Moose Charge, Diana’s team “Flashy Mudders” almost raised $1000 on their own. Great job, Diana.

Another ‘AAA’ local

Going through the Great North Midget league locals I missed Anthony Pelletier of Birch Island. The high scoring forward has already been putting his mark on the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves. In their first game they put down the (currently) second place North Bay Trappers with a dominant 9 – 3 win. Anthony proved that he is not only a sniper of reckon but can also set up his line-mates with a one-goal and four-assist effort in their only game played thus far. In fact, the other GNML teams might need to watch some videos of his line as they combined for 12 points alone! Apparently the youngster has been scouted by the NOJHL’s Nickel City Barons out of Sudbury. Anthony has been picked up as an affiliated player and will surely be playing some junior “A” this winter.

Another NOJHL’er is born

Skating in the NOJHL with locals Anthony Pelletier and Ronson Odjig will be Brandon Corbiere. The 6’2”, 162lb defender hails from Wikwemikong will suit up for the newly named, Elliott Lake Wildcats. Good luck everyone.

Active adults?

I see you out there quietly going about your exercise routines. Maybe you were in this weekend’s Terry Fox Run? Why not celebrate your accomplishments and maybe inspire another person to get going themselves. Drop me a line to the email below and I will try to get you some print for your efforts.
