Shawanosowe Bobcats’ Invitational
Mindemoya’s CMPS Eagles repeated as overall meet aggregate winners, having the best overall points total in the annual event. The race attracted teams from Manitoulin, the North Shore and Sudbury.
Individually, the following runners filled the top-three spots in their respective divisions. Unfortunately I was not able to fill in everyone’s surnames!
In the 6 and under class in 1st was Simon (LCPS), Joe (Pontiac) and Parker Johnston (CMPS) for the boys and Carson, Daisy and Lauren, all from Pontiac.
In the 7 – 8 boys’ contest it was a CMPS sweep with Easton Assinewai, David Joyce and Jesse Cooper crossing in 1, 2 and 3 fashion. The girls’ medalists featured Violet from Shawanosowe, Lily (LCPS) and Alina from C. C. McLean.
In the 9 – 10 boys’ race Jack Bridgeman (CMPS), 1st; Jean Claude (St. Joseph, Killarney), 2nd; and Lucas (C. C. McLean), 3rd. In the girls’ race Samantha McKenzie (CMPS) was first, Lily Stewart (Assiginack) second and Rowyn Kasunich (Lakeview), third.
Liam Lariviere (CMPS) was first across the line in the 11-12 year old boys’ race. Rylan Pennie (APS) and Corbin Best (C. C. McLean) took the remaining medals. In the girls’ race Mya Balfe (CMPS) was first, Sapphire Case (APS), second and Jennelle from Pontiac took third.
Finally in the 13 plus, elder division Brodie Pennie from Assiginack took first while Isaiah (Shawanosowe) took second and Liam (St. Joseph), third. In the always highly contested girls’ race Lakeview’s Maren Kasunich took first while training partner, Ava Assinewai, (CMPS) was second and fellow Eagle, Tessa McGillis-Prior, was third.
The final meet for Manitoulin cross country is Thursday, October 17 at C. C. McLean in Gore Bay, starting about 10:15 am.
Coach turns ringer, runner!
Gerry Holliday an avid athlete and coach over the years has been back in the over the last couple of years, training elite athletes Maren Kasunich and Ava and Easton Assinewai in track and cross-country with amazing returns! Next week, however, Gerry is flying out of Detroit, bound for California for a running adventure. He was poached to be one of a 12 member elite, master team in the Napa Valley Ragnar Relays.
Teams start in the heart of San Francisco where they’ll cross over the Golden Gate Bridge and pass charming farms and towering redwoods along the lower slopes of the Sierras. Over two days and one night, Gerry’s team will run through Sonoma County and into Napa Valley, where they’ll run past endless rows of grapevines in world-famous wineries to complete some 200 miles in total.
Gerry is slated to run an 8 miler (13K), 3 (5K) and finally a 5 mile (8K) section. Battling a persistent cold over the last while, Gerry is “hoping to survive” but we all know, he will always put in a great effort! Good luck, Gerry!
Speaking of elite runners…
James Scott has been a long-standing feature of this column over the last decade and a half because of his amazing running accomplishments. It is always great to hear that an athlete such as him continues to stay with athletics.
With that being said, James just beat his personal best time on Saturday, October 5 at the Fanshawe Invitational, coming in 25th overall running the 8K in 29:06, a 3:37/km effort. Way to go, James!
Can you run your age?
Ice Lake’s Wiwchar girls have started a tradition in which they try to run their age in kilometres. The eldest, Katie (in her mid 20s), has managed to maintain her streak in style. Amber, now 16, recently had to spend two days in Sudbury hospital after collapsing while running in fourth place during her NOSSA race. Using her GPS watch she was positive that she needed to run just a little bit further for her out-and-back trail run. As it turns out she ended up running 21 km on her 16th birthday! Congratulations, Amber!
Tri-Sport Tourney!
A unique competition took place in early October that featured three events: golf, hockey and baseball! The team named the Tri-Hards was made up of women from Manitoulin/Garden River and the Sudbury areas had an amazing event!
