Hats off to Jaden Shawana, playing in this past weekend’s Bell Capital Cup AAA. The son of former Panthers star Eddie Shawana and super runner Ramona Wakegijig, Jaden was selected to the Tournament All-Star team. Great work Jaden and parents!
The hockey Strains continue!
From the history of Little Current hockey’s upper echelon, Bill Strain’s legacy lives on. His son Todd (high-scoring former Panthers forward and a member of the first Manitoulin Nickel District Hockey League Champions) has also now passed on his skills to his son Wil. He is a member of the AAA London Knights Minor Midget squad is a power-house leading their 12-team AAA league and winning tournaments all over the place. Unlike Bill and Todd, Wil is a defenseman and already taller than his Dad (some may say that would not be hard to achieve!? Lol) Continue to have a great season, Wil!
Making a Case for Braeden!
Another NEMI Hockey player, Braedan Case, has begun training as a powerline technician. We wish the rushing defenseman a speedy path to his technician papers.
Nickel City Sons
Over this past weekend Wiikwemikoong’s Carson Shawana and Mindemoya’s Liam Bridgeman travelled south with their Nickel City Major Bantam AAA squad to participate in the Oshawa Invitational. An early Friday game meant a Thursday departure, and the NCS squad didn’t finish the four-game round robin until late Saturday night against hometown favourites the Oshawa Minor Generals. The NCS boys had a strong showing in a raucous, penalty filled affair that finished in a 2 – 0 loss. The resulting fourth place finish for NCS meant a rematch with the boys from “the ‘Shwa” in the elimination round Sunday morning, and in that semi-final the home side came out flying. Thankfully, leaving their Hanson brothers antics from Saturday’s tilt behind, the Minor Generals showcased why they are a top 20 provincially ranked team and thoroughly handled a tired NCS side. As for the Sons, Sunday’s effort was gamely completed by a battered 10 players, as the four day event took a heavy toll. Liam and Carson were among the players who toughed it out. Way to go boys!
G.T.P. rolls into the New Year as he ramped up the old year!
Greg Trudeau-Paquet, of course, has been on the tips of all the scouts’ tongues over the last year of his foray into Junior A hockey. He has not seemed to skip a beat into the New Year as he earned another N.O.J.H.L. game accolade. Greg won the second star as Kirkland easily won a game over the French River Rapids in a 7 – 2 rout with him getting one goal and one assist. Keep going, Greg!
