Canadian Native Fastball Championships 2018
Lyle, with his brother Kyle Baibomcowai, playing once again for the Westlake Cardinal Senior men’s squad, completed their three-peat as champs in Regina. Kyle also competed in the Under-23 Greystoke Team, but they didn’t come away with the hardware. Great job guys!
Haweater Runs!
Thanks to a growing number of volunteers, the annual Haw Runs (1K, 5k and 10K) took place this past weekend in Little Current. In the 10km race the top-ten finishers started with: Zack Gamege (38:09), Rob Campbell, Jessie MacNevin, Andrew Zimmerman, Monica Haring, Kristin Farquhar, Bobbie Landry, Amy Hoss, Steve Ross and Steve Fessenden.
Finishing first in the 5k race was Cindy Lewis with a great time of 19:09! She was followed by first names but not necessarily surnames! In second place was Jake Gougeon, then Georgie Chown, Mackenzie Campbell, Tom, Brodie Pennie, Steve M., Katie Delaney, Douglas and an Andrew!
The all-important volunteers begin with commander in chief Nelson Rochefort-Wood and Dale Wood, Cathy Wood, Vance Wood, Deana Debassige, Sarah Seabrook, Darwin Wood, Sydney Latva-Aro Cash and Duchene-Milne. The race committee is donating $1,000 to three deserving groups: Manitoulin Pet Rescue, the NEMI Library and the Furever Furbaby Rescue based out of Sudbury. Congratulations on another successful year, team!
Colour Run
Staying with Manitoulin sporting events keep the 5K Colour Run open on your schedule for August 19. The run, organized by Pride Manitoulin, “Into the Current” will have registration at 9 am and the gun goes at 9:30 am. Your very affordable $15 per person fee includes a t-shirt. The race headquarters are at the NEMI Library.
Manitoulin Fastball Finals
After a summer of exciting fastball the final standings are all set. The first round match-ups are as follows. The Wiikwemkoong Lumberjacks were first and receive a bye, The Mindemoya Brewers were second and will also be awarded with a pass through to the second round. The third place Kaboni Tigers will take on the sixth position, M’Chigeeng Youngbucks. The final first round series will feature the fourth place, Gore Bay Merchants versus the Wiikwemkoong Redmen who took fifth. Condolences to the M’Chigeeng Cliffrunners who finished just outside the playoff round. On the bright side, it is was so amazing to see so many teams and so many more players staying active and having fun on Manitoulin than in recent memory.
A reminder that the first round is a best of three. The higher seeded team has home field advantage. Organizers hope to get the second round going by Wednesday or Thursday or at the latest next week. If they run into any scheduling issues, they will make the schedule on whichever field is available so as to not hold up any of the series moving forward (even though it may not be, the earned, home field).
Ultimate Tuesdays!
A reminder that Low Island is the host location for a fun, all-ages and all-abilities, Ultimate pick-up game night. Every Tuesday at 7 pm, a fun group of players get together and make up some equitable teams for some great fun in this often, under-appreciated game. The game, as I may have mentioned before, Ultimate is one of the best exercises, least confrontational, self-refereed and fun, combinations you can have.

Summer visitor Daniel Johnson, who is the player/manager of his Kitchener-Waterloo/Guelph team Crash Ultimate, recently won 5th place at the World Ultimate Club Championships Cincinnati, Ohio. The team had an 8-1 record in the mixed division, and faced teams from all over the world, including Singapore and New Zealand. Crash qualified for the world championships after winning silver at the Canadian Ultimate Championships in Saskatoon last year. Formed in 2014, the team won the Canadian Ultimate Championships in its inaugural year. Dan is also the target of Ultimate, head-hunters who are looking to extend his season. Have fun, Daniel!
MICC Men’s Open
The Annual Manitoulin Island Country Club was an exciting event once again this year for the Men’s Open. Walking away with the lowest score were the father-son team of Warren and Justice Corbiere who won the championship flight by four strokes! They ripped through the 36 hole, final score of 132 (64-68). Finishing in second in that championship flight was Kelly Abotossaway and Shawn Assinewai, who tallied a two-day score of 136, (66-70). In the first flight, Marc Addison and Garrett Gouge finished first with a 36 hole score of 149 with Roger and Junior Beaudin took second with 150. Placing first in the second flight with a score of 154 was Cory Croft and Steve Pearson, with John and Andy Windsor second at 155. In the third flight, Anthony Rogerson and Matt Garneau were first with a score of 163 and Bob Marsh and John Garrett placed second with a score of 164. It should be noted that on Sunday, on the par 5 12th hole, after Bob O’Brien and his teammate Derek Crew had teed off, Mr. O’Brien’s second shot went in the hole for an eagle! Also on Sunday, Cam McLeod and his 10-year-old son Carson posted the low score of the day, a four under par 68.
