Island Three on Three stars

The annual Open-Ice 3 on 3 tournament in the Sault, as always, has Manitoulin teams challenging the top teams in the region. Although successful, local teams are not always easy to find in the sometimes cryptic team names, there were a couple of obvious Island teams that did very well.

One was a last minute midget team that put their squad together quite late but they were Jonny on the spot when it came to putting together a winning side. It should be mentioned that the silver medal team was also a Manitoulin side that was also at the top of the 12 squad registrants.

Hats off to the gold medalists, including: Alex Martin, Trinity Leeson, Mathew Redmond Wyatt Dearing Hunter Cranston, Aiden Chmielak, Jake Bennett, Kyle Heighington, Cameron Mundy and Lucas Sprack. Their coaches featured: Brent Leeson and Rob Dearing.

In the Peewee division an Island elite team went undefeated with quite a young squad. Congratulations to: Jack Carter, Jackson Noble, Corbin Best, Noah Grenier, Liam Lariviere, Rylan Carrick, Greyson Orford, Zee Toulouse, Gage Hughson, Ethan Witty and Coaches Clayton Best and Paula Noble.

Wiikwemkoong’s Shelley Wemigwans continues her stellar goaltending. She backstopped her team “Stick Munchers” to the women’s 3 on 3 gold in the Soo this past weekend. Previously she helped her squad to the Soo Women’s Championship.

Mustang OFSSA gymnasts excel

The Manitoulin Gymnastics team fared very well at the OFSAA Gymnastics Festival this week. Both Summer Beaudin (level 2) and Mackenzie Cortes (level 4) competed well against athletes from across the province. Of note, Mackenzie won the GOLD medal on vault, crowning her an OFSAA champion. She also placed 4th on bars, 4th on beam, and 6th on floor. Although, Summer did not place, she vaulted well in one of the strongest fields of vaulters Coach Heather Theijsmeijer has seen in quite a while, and her and fellow coach Jill Ferguson are both very proud of her performance.

Coach Theijsmeijer was recognized by OFSAA as one of the conveners of the competition, and was presented with a plaque at the festival banquet Sunday night. She was also interviewed extensively as the future of the OFSAA Gymnastics Festival is in peril and Heather made a strong case for the continuation of the event on CBC radio.
