Pearson Brothers Memorial Tournament rocks Prov!

The annual Pearson Brothers’ event is always a great time thanks to an impressive army of volunteers covering officiating, to bar shifts and canteen servers! The main organizers include the likes of Darren Dewar, Steve Orford as well as Heather and Greg Niven.

In the highly contested Sportsmen division, the “A” Winners “the Patriots” of Tanner Webkamigad, Jacy Kaboni, Ian Dokum, Latrell Peltier, Jordan Trudeau, Carson Shawana, Julien Wemigwans, Kurt Podlatis, Justin Lanktree and Chase Kanasawe edged out Team Campbell.

The B Winners are Team Karn over Team Redmond, including Corey Karn, Andrew Argall, Lucas Mackan, Jordan Smith, Mitch Payette  Zach Corrigan, Tyler Karn, Devin Lockeyer, Jeff Delange and Tyler King.

Making the Pearson Bros. officially an international event, local lad Craig Morrell brought up a stateside team, the Rochester Cold Cuts 40 plus “A” champs over the Gore Bay Fossils in a close game. Also included were: Bobby Visca, Ed Hall, Dave Abbatoy, Paul Monette. Front L to R: Adam Uzelac, Mike Letters, Allen Pardee, Eric Matzan, and Erik Abel.

In the 40 plus “B” division final, M’Chigeeng edged the Manitoulin Refills (still playing on a Sunday since 1989) in a match that needed overtime and kept fans on the edge of their seats!

Mustang minute

Congratulations to the Manitoulin Secondary senior volleyball team on their recent title win at the ELSS Invitational. Congratulations to coaches Tina Pennie-Balfe and Neil Debassige, assistant coach and their “small but mighty” team featuring: Aspen Debassige, Mya Balfe, Saraya Eshkawkogan, Morgan Green, Maren Kasunich, Harmony Panamick, Mackenzie Green and Emery Watson.

Off their Rock, Hockey!

Jack Bridgeman and his U15AA Nickel City Sons hosted the Soo Jr. Greyhounds over the weekend for a 3-game set in Nickel District Minor Hockey League action. The NCS team took the pair on Saturday, with Jack opening the scoring in game one, a 3-2 win. Jack notched the lone marker in a 1-0 game for the win. Then on Sunday he again potted one in a 2-2 tie. In all, outstanding goaltending and solid defensive play saw the NCS team take 5 of a possible 6 points to maintain their solid hold on first place in league standings. Way to go, Jack!

Greyson Case and his U-16 AA Sons were in the Silver Stick Championships this weekend after being a last minute replacement for a Dallas team! They held their own against the top teams with two ties and two losses. They were close to getting the wildcard spot but all the teams in the division had ties the first day! Greyson earned a player-of-the-game honour  thanks in part to his sniping ability with a clutch, third-period goal. He will be in regular league games until they travel to Montreal in February! Best of luck, Greyson!
