Off their Rock, hockey!

Kohyn Eshkawkogan and his U15 AAA Mississauga Reps is poised to be in the playoffs this spring. Kohyn has really been tightening down his defence and games that has been frustrating to the upper echelon of Triple-A hockey in Ontario. For instance, they have once again taken a game off the top-two Junior Canadiens. Their 3 – 1 win off the JRC has them now solidly in the 7th place in the GTHL playoff race. Great job, Kohyn!

March Break skating opportunities!

If you are thinking about more things to do during the upcoming March Break here is another source of free skating. The Rainbow Teachers’ Local has sponsored three consecutive days of skating, so you could take in four hours of skating if you moved between the three rinks.

The first opportunity is in Manitowaning on March 15 for a 1 – 2 pm free skate, then at the NEMI (Little Current) rec centre the day after on Thursday for an hour and a half from 2 to 3:30 pm. Finally, the road trip continues to Gore Bay Bruins’ lair for a 4:30 to 6 pm session. Take advantage everyone if you can!

Caught being active!

M’Chigeeng’s ageless wonder, Adam Debassige, is still playing sportsmen hockey at the energetic age of 75. He is also an unstoppable fan of his kids and all of their offspring and can be found in the stands cheering in rinks all across the province. My Dad fondly remembers Adam as his captain of the Manitowaning based Federals back in the ‘70s extinct Manitoulin Sportsmen League. Dad says he was this calm and gentle force that quietly lead by example. Keep going, Adam!

Tragic loss of a great sportsman

It is with a heavy heart that I learned of a congenial guy who played every sport he could and was sent on his final journey too soon.

Brandon Pheasant was well known as a great teammate and was involved in all local sports especially fastball, hockey and volleyball. Many tributes have been posted since and a couple of his close connections posted such as the following from Gerard Baibomcowai, who coached Brandon, as he pitched for the Sons of Pitches winning fastball squad.

“I remember him coming into the last game of the NSFL, ball, ball, ball, ball, like he walked three in a row…then strike, strike, strike to win the league. That’s the guy I remember….I’m glad we had a talk last night.”

Andrew (Snooze) Corbiere, himself a sports fanatic and most often a goaltender, recalls him most vividly, “Playing hockey against you, with you, and you getting a hat trick against me winning the game last night for your team, is how I want to remember you, a great hockey player and a friend, Baamaapii, Brandon.”

A good sport is good for sports.
