Multi-sport expert
Congratulations to the Manitoulin’s Steve Arthurs who competed in the Bruce Peninsula Multisport Race. Steve finished third over-all in the 24 km, paddle-bike-paddle duathlon in under two hours. To make it even more impressive, Steve was third overall against 26 of the others racers, some even in the in the relay division.
Paul Williams Memorial Fastball champs
Congratulations to Captain Andrew “Snooze” Corbiere and his co-ed roster of Tammy Augonie, Justice Corbiere, Wade Debassige, Lee Taibossigai, Gabe Hare, Rising Sun Hare, Beth “M”, Jesse Augonie, Whittier Gauthier and Ashlyn Hare. The team won the co-ed, fastball division of the annual division.
Local player noticed
Congratulations to Jacob Genereux who was contacted last fall by the recruitment manager of the West Nipissing Jr A Lynx. The team is part of the Greater Metro Hockey League North. He was offered a defensive position on the team and will be leaving on the 28th of August with his opening game happening on September sixth in Sturgeon Falls. Way to go, Jacob!
Kayaker on his way up!
Teenager Lucas Gilpin (son of Gord Gilpin and grandson of Barb Breathat and Jim Gilpin) has been recognized by his renowned coach at the Sudbury Canoe and Kayak Club as a promising prospect as a sprint kayaker. He has been up in the standings this season, yet still relatively new to the sport and even opting to take on a six kilometer, sprint. Keep up with your training, Lucas!
Maritime radio training opportunity
If you are out in our fabulous big waters in and around Manitoulin Island, you may have been or may in the future be in a situation where you may be in the need of assistance from outside forces; been there! Good news, the Sudbury chapter of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron will be holding a one day maritime radio (VHF) course at Kenjgewin Teg in M’Chigeeng.
The course material will be available a couple of weeks in advance to allow participants to get to know the specific details that may include learning the phonetic alphabet prior to the course. The underfive hour review of the curriculum is culminated with a modest test.
