Happy New Year!
Okay, full disclosure here: over the years, I may have often offered a New Years’ resolution reinforcement to readers, if only to selfishly encourage the most slothful (okay, me) amongst us. So as a proponent of under-training versus over-training, I have done some of the legwork for us ‘lethargies’ to make sure that WE are the most efficient in our efforts. I mean it would be a sad to think I would put in more effort needed to become fit only to be hamstrung by some heinous: repetitive strain, overuse, stress fracture, type injury and not to mention the multitude of itis’s from tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) to jumper’s knee (infrapatellar tendinitis)! I’m sure I have diagnosed myself with all of them at some point during my rocky walk on the healthier path.
Everything that I have been able to assimilate during my research to a “good health” us (me) seems to point to us, picking smaller goals and working from there. So, perhaps we should not say, “I will run a marathon by 2017.” But feasibly, shoot for a month-long goal like: I will be able to walk a 5K by February, then jog-walk a 5K by March, jog 5K and walk 5k by the end of May, jog a 10K by June’s end, and so on and so on.
Essentially, most of what I have heard and read points to compartmentalizing our end-goals into much more attainable baby-steps, along with the proper celebrations and absolutions all along the way.
Manitoulin Minor Hockey spotlight
This is a continuing information spot for the column on the MMHA. There is always a spot for teams to send in their team’s information to celebrate the great things teams are doing whether they show up on the scoresheet or not! This week, in honour of the organization hoping for a better New Year, they would like everyone to understand exactly what they are promoting.
Manitoulin Minor Hockey offers a wonderful chance for kids of all ages to learn the fun sport of hockey. They are able to learn about the sport, teamwork, working hard, playing hard and having fun. It is a great opportunity for parents as well to help shape their children for a future of sport.
Manitoulin Minor hockey is governed by Hockey Canada, and under that NOHA (Northern Ontario Hockey Association) and at the local level the Manitoulin Minor Hockey. This is made up of an executive of 4 with a representative from every association on the Island. They all meet monthly to ensure that the sport of hockey is being played fairly and to deal with any issues that may arise.

Young Panthers prowl for extra experience
First year Panther Atom goalie Saraya Eshkawkogan was recently offered a position with the Pro Hockey Development – 2006 Elite AAA Girls team. The offer to play with the Elite summer team was followed up by her solid performance in helping her Atom Panther team recently beat the undefeated NCHA Crushers with over 30 saves.
Panther Novice and brother Kohyn Eshkawkogan was similarly presented a position with the Pro Hockey Development – 2008 AAA Boys team. With 2 goals, an assist, and strong defensive play, that made him an obvious addition to the heavily talented roster.
With Alumni such as Patrick Kane, PK Subban, and 100s of NHL’ers/OHL’ers, the Pro Hockey Development group helps players get the experience needed to reach the next level. Both players are excited for the opportunity to play with some of this country’s best in the summer of 2016.
Refill retraction
As someone proud to be maligned as a member as the Providence Bay Refills I may have been “premature” in my celebration during my pre-Christmas reporting of their one and only tournament wins at last month’s, excellent, Frosty Cup in Gore Bay. An event in which I had been placed on the I.R. (injured reserved) list, I may been slightly over-exuberant of what I had perceived a teammates’ brief text as our, surely to be only, trophy-hoisting moment. That exciting missive was merely just one celebrating a round-robin win over the always-mighty M’Chigeeng squad who was depleted in the preliminaries but were well-stocked when it all counted in the finals when the likes of Derek Debassige, Mike Panamick, John Ense, Neil Debassige as well as a few other shy, sharpshooters.
A good sport is good for sports.
