Off to OFSAA!
The Manitoulin Mustangs have had a banner year in track and field this season and kept it going during last week’s Northern Ontario NOSSA championship in the Sault. As a team MSS placed a very respectable 11th of 36 schools (12th on the girls’ side, 8th on boys).
Manitoulin will send an amazing 12 qualifiers to OFSAA, being held in Mississauga at St Marcellinus High School this Thursday through Saturday. Kennedy Lanktree took 1st in senior girls’ long jump with a leap of 4.95 m, Braedan Case 1st in midget boys 400 m (in 56 seconds!), William Scott 1st in junior boys 400 m with a scorching, 54 second dash, as well as Bronwyn Cooper will be heading south thanks to a great effort in the junior girls’ 3000 m. Bronwyn will be racing against the standard set by former Mustang, Kaitlyn Tallman who broke the OFSAA record in 2004 with an amazing 10:28 clocking. Scarlet Noel midget girls’ high jump thanks to a jump of 1.39 m. The junior boys’ team in the 4 x 100 m relay (William Scott anchoring Thomas Hayden, Connor Croft and Carter Noble) qualified. The senior boys 4 x 100 relay team of Harrison Noble, Brad Blodgett, Jake Bond and Luke Bond will also be joining the OFSAA contingent.
Congratulations as well to these other amazing top-five performances: Connor Croft 5th – in Javelin, Isaac Sloss 5th – triple jump, Ali Cosby 5th – triple jump, Devin Gelaznikas 3rd – discus, Nea McLaughlin 5th – triple jump, William Lindner 5th – 300 m hurdles, Mikaila Kennedy 4th – high jump, Luke Bond 5th – long jump, Brittany Wall 5th – 1500 m and Wyatt Kennedy 4th – 1500 m, 3rd – 2:03 in the 800 m against a 1:59 that broke the 8 year old OFSAA record!

RDSB Senior meet accolades
Last Thursday, athletes from across the Island took their skills on the road to the annual RDSB qualifying meet. As usual Manitoulin was recognized as a force in athletics with many athletes taking top honours. Here are the local top-three performers. CMPS’s James Scott won the overall bantam boys title with an amazing 28 points that included wins in the 400 m (almost sub-60!) and 800m and nearly a win in the 1500m although he has his strategy worked out for the champions’ meet. From LCPS, congrats to Sydney Koehler 3rd – 1500 m, Adam Goodfellow 2nd – long jump, Ethan Vatour 3rd – long jump, Faith Taylor 2nd – 400m.
Hailing from CC McLean: Hannah Woestenuk 1st – shot put, Kayla Greenman 1st – triple, 3rd – 100 m, Mikayla Noble 1st – high jump, 1st – long jump, 2nd – 800 m, Delaney Madore 2nd – 1500 m, Brooke Addison 3rd – shot put, Jacob Maxwell 1st – long jump and Patrick Smith 2nd – high jump. Boogie Rushers
Congratulations to the now muddy group of racers who attended the Special Olympics fundraiser: the Boogie Rush Mud Run. Part of the Guardians of the Flame Endurance Series, the obstacle race featured all kinds of fun ‘tortures’ all for a good cause. Legion Meet opportunity extended
Island track and field athletes have a great offer from the Gore Bay Legion Branch 514 to get free entry and registration into the District H Meet coming up at Laurentian University on June 14. It is open to all Island athletes 17 years and under as of December 31 volunteer registrar, Darryl Leighton is hoping to maintain the strong representation from Manitoulin Island again this year. For the last couple of meets the local Branch covered the registration costs for all Island athletes in various events. With meet-day registration not permitted Darryl’s offer will not only save families money but he will make things a lot easier. The deadline has been extended but you need to send him information by this Friday, June 6 so please contact Darryl right away, so he can get the necessary forms out to you. Ball-hockey night in Manitowaning!
A lot kids have been taking advantage of a great opportunity for the last two Mondays at the Assiginack, Arena, with June 9 and June 16 still available. Ball-hockey nights go from 6:30 – 8pm and is just a loonie per night. You just need your running shoes, helmet with mask, stick, gloves and shin pads. All kids welcome. Just drop in, no registration required.
It is great to see a dedicated bunch of volunteers keeping kidsí softball alive and well in Mindemoya. Glen Duncanson, a famous Manitoulin pitcher himself is once again, generously giving up his time to organize three age groups with kids as young as 4 and as old as 14, spanning seven teams. Thanks as well to these other valuable organizers and coaches who make it all possible: Suzanne White, Lori Leeson, Carrie Spry, Marcus Mohr, Darren Smith, Chris King, Reid Taylor, Bart Case, Lee Carrick and Royce Young.
