Laidley working hard to make impression in Ivy League
Little Current’s Michael Laidley has been working hard all summer to get himself into the best possible shape he can be to help out his new team this fall. Laidley earned a full scholarship to St. Lawrence University, stateside in Canton, New York. Michael is well aware of what it take to be an elite athlete and wants to be in the best shape and at the top of his game going into training camp.
On top of the regular training he does on his own, Michael has been getting personalized one on one training with Pro Tech Hockey Academy’s Jim Emmett. (Sheguiandah’s Nick Esposto is also a trainer for Pro Tech) He is also just back from Denmark where his coach from the Junior ‘A’ Aurora Tigers runs a hockey school. Michael was one of 10 Canadians and the rest of the participants were from around Europe.
Michael is heading down to Canton next week for two days of fitness testing. Judging by how serious he is taking this opportunity I’m sure his evaluators will be impressed with the freshman. Good luck, Michael.
Local athlete recognized
Spring Bay’s Victoria Niven, a long-time CrossFit aficionado, was recruited to specialize in Olympic lifts when a coach at Laurentian spotted her great technique and obvious strength. Victoria has had some success already, finishing second at her last event in the snatch and clean and jerk lifts. She has been working hard this summer in preparation for a competition later this month. Keep up the hard work, Victoria!
Haw Run runners
Congratulations to the energetic runners who took part in the one or more of the three fun runs offered this past Haweater Weekend in Little Current. In the 10km version the top three male runners were Gord Chown, Camiel Veruseij and Rom Severino. The first women Stacey Trottier, Mackenzie Turner and Leslie Marshal.
Leading the men in the 5km race was once again, Gord Chown then Greg Bond and Tom Chown. The first three women were: Anna Pryce, Bethany Milne-Scott and Karissa Merrylees. Congratulations to all the participants in the 1km, 5 and 10km races as well as organizer Nelson Wood and his volunteers.
Espanola Express to hold tryout
The newest NOJHL team, the Espanola Express, will be holding another one-day tryout. This one will be held at the Pete Palangio Arena in North Bay this coming Saturday, August 8. For more information you can visit the team’s website at www.espanolaexpress.com.
Beaton Classic this weekend
The annual quadrathlon, the Beaton Classic (swimming, biking, running and paddling) is this coming Sunday in and around Sudbury’s Lake Ramsey. For more information you can visit the Running Room website or the Sudbury Rocks events section.
Community sports’ organizer recognition
Hats off to the continued fine work by Ralph Gonawabi of Wikwemikong in sports/recreation. Ralph is an organizer of every sport imaginable and a great contributor to ‘participaction’ in the community. Keep up the good work! Ralph, by the way, is the son of the late Walter Gonawabi, a long-time Wiky sports fundraiser/volunteer himself and was the creator of The Manitoulin Expositor trophy presented annually to the overall winner of the Wiky 10K Road Race held the 3rd Sunday of October for the past 40 plus years.
A good sport is good for sports.
