Hospitals left dangling while province hordes cash
To the Expositor:
The Manitoulin Health Centre is facing an unfunded burden of $1.4 million (The Manitoulin Expositor, February 1, 2023) because the shortage of nurses here has to be made up by hiring temporary nurses at much higher costs. Meanwhile, I was astonished to learn from the Council of Canadians that the Ontario government had a surplus of more than $2 billion in 2021/22, and that it isn’t on track to spend the money allocated for 2022/23, despite the crying need. It seems money was allocated in the 2022/23 budget, but the government hasn’t spent it, and the result is pain, especially in health care and education.
Why is the government forcing Manitoulin Health Centre, along with many others, into “unfunded deficits,” barely hanging on while they didn’t even spend the money that was allocated? More to the point, what can people do about it?
Thank you,
Jan McQuay
