LITTLE CURRENT–During the Civic holiday weekend, from Friday, August 1 to Monday, August 4, Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was busy responding to calls for service.
Over the three-day weekend, OPP responded to 110 calls for service, reports Constable Allan Boyd Community Services Officer with the Manitoulin OPP.
“The Civic holiday weekend is our busiest time of the year and with the amount of people attending the Island, this reflects the needs for police assistance and response,” Constable Boyd said. “Out of the 149 calls Island-wide, 110 were in the Little Current area during the Haweater Weekend festivities, which is a decrease of 88 calls for service from 2013. Haweater draws crowds of upwards to 5,000 to 10,000 people with all the great events that weekend has to offer. With this amount of people the calls for service definitely increases from the rest of the year, however I am pleased to report that no major incidents took place and we had no alcohol related motor vehicle collisions.”
S/Sgt. Kevin Webb, detachment commander for the Manitoulin OPP, thanked the organizers from the Little Current Lions Club and all the volunteers with the Haweater event. “Their efforts made this Haweater Weekend a success. I am pleased that we had no disturbance at any of the venues this year. The OPP was out last year and this year in full force and no breaks were given. Strict enforcement has paid off making this Haweater Weekend a quiet and safe one. We will be ready for next year too.”

- Highway Traffic Act – 25 charges (down 23 from 2013)
- Criminal Code Charges – 12 charges (up 1 from 2013)
- Controlled Drug and Substance Act – 2 charges (down 2 from 2013)
- Liquor Licence Act – 52 charges (up 5 from 2013)
- Three-day Licence Suspension Road Side Device – 1 suspension (up 1 from 2013)
