MANITOULIN – “Grow-a-Row Manitoulin is a people-helping program encouraging gardeners to plant an extra row of veggies and to share the harvest with those in need,” explained coordinator Kristin Bickell. “The program is spearheaded by the Compost Council of Canada and the Garden Writers Association, with support from local food banks.”
“Donations support the Manitoulin Good Food Box program, which is designed to provide local children and families, particularly those living on low incomes, with access to affordable and healthy fruits and vegetables,” added Ms. Bickell.
“It’s a really great program that helps support local children and families with affordable vegetables,” said Ms. Bickell. “The program helps supplement what is already going into the Good Food Boxes with extra produce and herbs. It also helps add variety to the boxes.”
Ms. Bickell said Grow-a-Row Manitoulin is not only reaching out to individuals to plant an extra row, but also schools, garden clubs and community gardens.
“Whether your vegetable garden is large or small, add an additional row, bed or pot and plant something extra,” urged Ms. Bickell. “Bumper crop of zucchini? Unexpected success of your carrot crop? Donate the extra vegetables to our local Grow-a-Row efforts. Encourage your family and friends to do the same.”
The group is seeking all fresh produce, though Ms. Bickell said root vegetables (carrots, beats and potatoes) are preferred. However, any produce that can be easily handled and stored, including broccoli, cabbage, peas, beans, tomatoes, radishes, peppers, summer squash and herbs, will gladly be excepted.
The group will be collecting produce for donation for the Manitoulin Good Food Box program which packs boxes the third Tuesday of every month on June 16, July 21, August 18, September 15 and October 20.
