GORE BAY—Gore Bay town council has received some good news in regard to possible funding for the second phase of the town’s marina expansion project.
“We had made an application for funding to the NOHFC (Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation) for phase two of the marina expansion,” said Gore Bay Mayor Ron Lane at a council meeting last week.
In a letter to Gore Bay dated December 15 from Scott Kunnas, manager of program services with NOHFC wrote in part, “The NOHFC has determined that your project is potentially eligible and will proceed for further review and evaluation,” explained Mr. Kunnas. “Please note that although your application is proceeding, it does not mean that it will be approved for funding. The NOHFC’s programs are non-entitlement, discretionary programs and not all projects meeting the program eligibility criteria will be approved.”
Mayor Lane said phase two of the marina expansion project is for a new dock section off fish point east, off the break point. “There are three phases to the expansion plans. We are asking NOHFC to fund half of the project and we have dedicated funding for the other half.”
Councillor Dan Osborne inquired as to the state of the town application for funding through FedNor.
Mayor Lane explained that FedNor has indicated they wouldn’t have funds available for this project.
The Town of Gore Bay would contribute 50 percent, or $1,765,857.50, of the project costs ($3,531,715). And further, the Town of Gore Bay would cover any cost overruns related to this project.
The town will be required to submit a more detailed proposal for their project, including supporting documentation to NOHFC.
