Gore Bay Laundromat closed after dryer ignites, causes damage

GORE BAY—The Gore Bay Laundromat will be closed until further notice after a damaging fire took place last week.

Duncan Sinclair, deputy fire chief of the Gore Bay/Gordon-Barrie Island Fire Department, reported that the fire took place on the evening of Wednesday, January 9.

“Luckily the damage was limited to one dryer in the laundromat that was completely lost in the fire,” said Mr. Sinclair. He explained the fire department had received a page about the fire at about 7 pm on January 9, that one of the dryers in the laundromat was on fire, and was so hot it melted the dryer door.

As well as damage done to the one dryer there was extensive smoke damage.

The laundromat building is located on Meredith Street. Mr. Sinclair said the fire could have proven to be a potentially huge problem due to the close proximity of several other businesses to it, including The Recorder (which is located in the front part of the building).

However, thanks to the swift response by the fire department, they extinguished the fire quickly and limited the damage that the laundromat could have incurred.
