Gore Bay golfer wins U17 ladies Northeastern Ontario Junior Golf Tour championship

GORE BAY—Amy Smith of Gore Bay has won the under 17 age ladies’ division overall championship of the Northeastern Ontario Junior Golf Tour (NEOJGT)!

“I’ve played golf my entire life, but this was my first year playing competitive golf,” Ms. Smith said.

Ms. Smith explained, “I was first overall in my division according to points (accumulated by each golfer based on how they placed in each tournament they took part in). Most of the time I won second place medals (in tournaments) over the summer. There was one girl, who is a year older at 16 who is very good and she won a lot of the tournaments.”

“I played in a total of eight tournaments,” said Ms. Smith, who is 15 years old. “We played at courses in Blind River, Elliot Lake, Parry Sound and the North Bay area.” The season started in early June.

“Yes, it was a lot of fun,” said Ms. Smith who said she is looking forward to playing on the NEOJGT again in 2024, “and for our high school (Manitoulin Secondary School) golf team. We have the pre-NSSSAA (North Shore Secondary School Athletic Association) championships in mid-September.”
