MANITOULIN—Two schools on Manitoulin Island will be learning how to grow and raise fish to be planted in local waters, thanks to the efforts of the Gore Bay Fish and Game Club (GBFGC).
Members the GBFGC collected eggs from adult female salmon at the Kagawong River last week. Club members helped put together and dropped off just under 200 Chinook salmon eggs to both Central Manitoulin Public School in Mindemoya and Charles C. McLean Public School in Gore Bay to raise in micro-hatcheries this winter.
“The students at both schools will feed and raise the fish eggs, which will hopefully hatch out in December,” said Ian Anderson of the GBDFGC. “And then the students will continue to raise the fish until the spring, when they will then release them back into the river.”
Mr. Anderson, along with Ches Witty, Ken Clark and Bob Mullis, took part in collecting the salmon eggs and setting up the micro-hatchery’s for the schools.
