LAKE WOLSEY—Beautiful weather provided for a great day of fishing, which was the case this past Saturday as the Gore Bay and District Fish and Game Club (GBFGC) held its annual Kids Fishing Derby with great results.
“What a great day,” stated Ian Anderson of the GBFGC at the presentations held after the derby had concluded. “On behalf of the Gore Bay and District Fish and Game Club I would like to thank all of you here today for participating.”
Mr. Anderson noted the long list of sponsors for the annual event who donated prizes for the event, and he said without their help and support the derby would not take place. Each kid who took part in the derby received a prize.
“To put on this derby takes a lot of organization and coordinating, and a lot of people volunteer and help out. But it is the Witty family that do the bulk of the work, and Ches (Witty) is the spearhead for organizing this entire event,” said Mr. Anderson.
“There was a total of 95 kids that registered for the derby, which is great,” said Mr. Anderson, “and 31 of the kids entered in the derby caught fish–that’s good as well.”
There were three age categories for special prizes for those who caught perch in the derby. In the category, age 1-6 division, Sydney Lazure-Deschamps, age five, caught the largest perch at 485 grams, to take the first place prize, while Clara McFadden, age one, took second place catching a perch weighing 233 grams.
Taking first place in the kids’ age 7-11 division was Kohan Campbell, 10, with a catch of a perch weighing 184 grams. Lucas Laquerre, nine, was second with a catch of 139 grams.
In the age 12-18 division, Gwyneth McLeod, age 15, took top spot with a perch weighing 137 grams. Nevaeh Harper, age 12, was second with a perch weighing 124 grams.
Taking first place prize in the rainbow trout category was Lucas Wright of Evansville with a fish weighting four pounds, 13 ounces.
There was no entrance fee to take part in the derby, and every child received a prize. As well, there was free hotdogs, donuts and muffins, chocolate milk and soft drinks donated by Lafarge Quarry, Dean’s Valu-Mart, Tim Hortons inChelmsford, Val Caron and Hanmer, and Parmalat Canada, free for all participants.
