GORDON/BARRIE ISLAND – The Gore Bay/Gordon-Barrie Island volunteer fire department responded to a call this past Saturday involving a grass fire.
The report of the grass fire was responded to by members of the fire department at 5:30 pm Saturday evening, at 12935 Highway 540 in Gordon/Barrie Island Township, fire chief Mike Addison told the Recorder. A local resident had a fire permit and had been burning garbage and brush when the fire got out of his control.
Mr. Addison noted that the firefighters didn’t allow the blaze to become large, because they basically circled the fire to contain it. As it was it took the nine firefighters who responded a total of four hours (to douse the fire and clean-up afterward) to put out the blaze. There were no injuries.
There was a van parked in the bush on the property, as well as a camper-trailer that were badly damaged in the fire, but both looked as if they were not functioning units regardless. As well several bales had to be ripped apart and doused in the blaze. The fire department used a new piece of equipment it recently purchased to deal with fires, on this blaze, a gas-powered leaf blower.
The fire department added that with the current extremely dry conditions, people need to be use extra caution and be extra vigilant in taking all precautions to make sure fires do not get out of control.
