George was born in Providence Bay, Manitoulin Island on September 25, 1931 and raised in Providence Bay, Hamilton and Sudbury. Upon graduation from Sudbury High School, George attended Queen’s University to pursue a degree in metallurgical engineering. It was at Queen’s where he met Mary Daly. Within days of graduation, George and Mary were married. They returned to Sudbury where George began his career with Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. in 1957. George moved to the Falconbridge townsite in 1964 where he and Mary raised their two children Mike and Anne and remained there until he downsized to a condo in Sudbury 2011. After Mary’s death in 1992, George married long time family friend Lorraine (Saville). Don Saville, Lorraine’s deceased spouse, had been the best man at George’s wedding. George enjoyed a lengthy career with Falconbridge, retiring as Vice President, Sudbury Operations in 1989. He was prominent in the local community, serving on a number of boards and committees. He retired from curling in 2010, as the oldest active member of the Falconbridge Curling Club where he had been a member for over 45 years. George never lost his connection to Manitoulin Island. The family cottage at Manitowaning was his refuge from the stresses of corporate life. He and Mary and his children spent countless weekends at the cottage or visiting in Providence Bay. George was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. Despite his age and health challenges, George treasured his annual deer hunting trip on the Manitoulin. Special thanks to Greig Saville for keeping this tradition alive through 2011. In retirement George and Lorraine were in a constant state of motion. In addition to their residence in Falconbridge, they bought a home in Providence Bay where they spent may happy hours gardening, doing deer runs, cross country skiing and organizing large family gatherings to coincide with the annual August Fall Fair. George loved it all and was loved by all. He will be deeply missed. Special thanks to caregivers Aline, Roxanne, Kelly and Roger. Memorial Service was in the R.J. Barnard Chapel at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury on Friday, May 16, 2014 at 1 pm (friends gathered after 12 noon Friday). In memory of George, donations to the Alzheimer Society, Sudbury-Manitoulin would be appreciated.
