TEHKUMMAH—A one-room schoolhouse may reappear in Tehkummah next year as fundraising efforts by the Island’s Amish community to build a parochial school have been underway for a couple of years. One such event is the second annual pork roast taking place Saturday, May 20 from 11 am to 1:30 pm at the farm of Dan and Elaine Zehr, located at 20385 Highway 6, just five minutes from the ferry docks in South Baymouth on Saturday.
The Expositor reached out to one of the organizers, John Albrecht of Tehkummah, who noted that while the community is not building the schoolhouse just yet, things are progressing well.
The envisioned schoolhouse would incorporate one classroom to accommodate around 20 students from Grade 1 to Grade 8.
“We are planning to build next year,” said Mr. Albrecht, who pointed out that there are still planning board approvals and zoning to be dealt with.
The pork roast lunch will include pork, dressing, a variety of salads and homemade pies for dessert. An accompanying bake sale will take place starting at 10 am and a quilt sale will begin at 2 pm. Starting at 1:30 pm there will be an auction featuring donated items such as a mini-shed, picnic table, wood stoves, bird feeders, tools, firewood, large quilts, seed drills, pet lambs, swather head, seed drills, Tingley rubber boots, wall hangings, a pony and cart with harness, and a host of service fees. All items have been donated for the Amish Parochial School.
