Funding for cruise ship growth welcome news

As would be support for the S.S. Norisle

To the Expositor:

As reported in the January 10 edition of The Expositor, ‘Great Lakes mayors group gets funding to study enhancing cruise ship experience,’ I was encouraged to read that cruise ship operators have suggested that the industry could grow up to four times in the coming years. One of the reasons why I love Manitoulin Island and have property in Meldrum Bay is its rich marine boating and fishing heritage. The return of larger passenger ships docking in Little Current is not only exciting but also reflects this maritime heritage.

As one of the “Friends of the Norisle,” I and others have supported its refurbishment in the hope that the Norisle will again carry passengers throughout the North Channel. An upgraded Norisle will promote the efforts of Manitoulin tourism and its home port of Manitowaning. Each summer I make a trip to this lovely village to view the ship that I sailed on in earlier days. As a boat builder I can appreciate the expense to bring this vessel up to current standards of safety and passenger comfort bur surely the effort will be worth it. Manitoulin needs this historical jewel and I believe we should support the Norisle in any way we can.
