Friendship stitched together: Tehkummah women unite over vintage sewing machines

TEHKUMMAH—Three local women gathered at Evelyn Santos’ home in Tehkummah February 1 to breathe new life into their vintage 1940s sewing machines.

“I thought this was neat,” stated Jennifer Graham, Ms. Santos’ daughter. “Think about men with their car shows and ladies with sewing machines.”

Ms. Santos hosted friends Nancy Lynn from Mindemoya and Susan Hart, also from Tehkummah, for an afternoon of sewing, treats and storytelling.

The ‘Sewing Circle’ transformed Ms. Santos’ kitchen room into a cozy workshop filled with colourful fabrics. The centrepiece was their cherished Singer sewing machines, family heirlooms. “These machines have a lot of history,” said Ms. Santos.

The group decided to work on individual projects that would symbolize their talents. Each woman contributed unique fabrics, reflecting their stories.

As the humming of the machines could be heard, the ladies reminisced about their first sewing experiences and shared tips. “There’s something special about working with a machine that has so much character,” Ms. Santos noted.

As the day ended, the ladies admired their progress and discussed future gatherings to inspire others in the community. “We should encourage more people to learn this craft,” said Ms. Lynns.

This gathering highlights the power of community and the joy of sewing together. With their vintage sewing machines, Evelyn, Nancy and Susan are weaving a lasting tapestry of friendship.
