Friends of the Billings Library’s Jan Bainbridge is a credit to Kagawong

KAGAWONG—When Billings Library board member Elsie Christian approached Jan Bainbridge (among others) to form a group to raise much needed funds for the purchase of books for the library, Ms. Bainbridge knew she could do something.

The purpose of Friends of the Billings Library (FOBL) when founded two years ago was “to promote awareness of the programs and services provided by the Billings Public Library and to raise funds to offset recent shortfalls and cutbacks. Fundraising efforts and events will initially be dedicated to augmenting the library’s book-buying budget.”

Going into their third year, FOBL activities include a silent auction (which is overwhelmingly successful) held during Christmas in Kagawong. Ms. Bainbridge stated that community members have already approached them in regards to donating items for next November.

With many pairs of talented hands among them, FOBL individuals crafted table runners, baby quilts and other items. They called upon Gore Bay Lions Club member Anita Lalonde, who was able to assist in obtaining a raffle licence.

Wednesday’s market held during the summer months saw members selling baked goods, pot holders and table runners made by treasurer Barb Bright. They sold iced coffee, books and a variety of other items. Proceeds from this summer’s market, shared Ms. Bainbridge, will go towards the purchase of e-books.

“The library is really important to all of us,” stated Ms. Bainbridge, who holds the position of chair. Other members include Don Bainbridge, Barb Bright, Linda Ferguson, Sabine Huege (secretary), Victoria Mazzuchin and Rachel Valade.

Ms. Ferguson assisted in raising funds by selling baked goods and iced coffee at Billings Recreation Committee’s annual Bark in the Park event held last September.

When asked what other volunteer work Ms. Bainbridge was involved in she shared that she is a member of the Island quilting guild. “There is genuine caring in the quilt,” she shared. These works of art are given to chemotherapy patients who live in the community or to families who have lost their homes in a house fire.

“I’ve never felt such a sense of community,” stated Ms. Bainbridge. “There are so many good people stepping up in Kagawong.”

Ms. Bainbridge and Ms. Bright, through the efforts of FOBL, recently presented library board chair Bill Elliott with a cheque for $2,745 from raffle ticket proceeds. To date they have raised close to $5,000 from books, baked goods, raffle tickets and silent auction sales.

Mr. Elliott paid tribute to FOBL members at the April 1 Billings council meeting stating that partially due to their efforts, the board would not be asking for additional funds from the township.

Two years ago the library had what Mayor Aus Hunt referred to as “serious concerns.”

The funding crisis was averted and Mayor Hunt and fellow council members were pleased to hear the good news report from Mr. Elliott.
